Love Is The Drug
The Bryan Ferry Orchestra Lyrics

To wait for the bell to ring
T'ain't no big t'ing
The toll of the bell
Aggravated - spare for days
I troll downtown the red light place
Jump up bubble up - what's in store
Showing out, showing out, hit and run
Boys meet girl, where the beat goes on
Stitched up tight, can't shake free
Love is the drug, got a hook on me
Oh oh catch that buzz
Love is the drug I'm thinking of
Oh oh can't you see
Love is the drug for me
Late that night I park my car
Stake my place in the singles bar
Face to face, toe to toe
Heart to heart as we hit the floor
Lumber up limbo down
The locked embrace, the stumble round
I say go, she say yes
Dim the lights, you can guess the rest
Oh oh catch that buzz
Love is the drug I'm thinking of
Oh oh can't you see
Love is the drug got a hook in me
Oh oh catch that buzz
Love is the drug I'm thinking of
Oh oh can't you see
Love is the drug for me
Oh
Oh
Love is, love is, love is the drug
The Bryan Ferry Orchestra's Love Is The Drug is a classic love song that speaks in symbolic terms to the addictive nature of love. The lyrics comprise of several allegories and metaphors that create a vivid narrative of love as a drug, an addiction that takes over the senses and causes disorientation. The song opens with the phrase "T'ain't no big t'ing to wait for the bell to ring," which means that the wait for love is not a big deal as it will eventually come to one. The following line, "The toll of the bell," is a reference to the Bell of St. Clements, which was used to signal the start of the curfew in London. In the context of the song, the bell is used as a metaphor for love, calling out to those seeking it.
The second verse of the song speaks to the idea that love is an addiction that is difficult to shake off once it has taken hold. The phrase "Love is the drug, and I need to score" is an analogy that suggests a person seeking love as a drug addict would seek their fix. The third verse describes a night out on the town looking for love, in a world where boys meet girls, and the beat goes on. The lyrics also speak of the physical embrace and the need to dim the lights, which implies a sexual encounter that is part of the addiction. The chorus repeats the message that love is the drug, and the singer is hooked and cannot break free.
