The band seemed to get a degree of support from their record label, Island, for their first two LPs, the hard edged "The Buck Pets," and the more melodic follow up "Mercurotones." The band also had opening spots on tour with larger acts such as Jane's Addiction, but in the end The Buck Pets brand of intelligent, crafted, alternative hard rock was probably a few a years too early to see commercial success. However, the band had a large following in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Norman, Oklahoma area who still miss them.
As a coda, the The Buck Pets released the more restrained, melancholy "To The Quick" -- a fine, almost totally ignored LP -- in 1993 on the independent label Restless.

Is my mistake
Another decision
That i can't make
So, give me
Some understanding
If you try,
You may be perfect
Tell me
Another secret
When you're talking
In your whisper
If it seems like
We're unaffected
Well, what more
Could you ask for?
I can believe
In what i see
Moves too fast
In front of me
Yeah, some new directions
I'd better take
There's a difference
That you can make
So it's simple
And it's easy
You're the best thing
That I've seen
If you try hard,
You may be perfect
So, tell me
Another secret
When you're talking
In your whisper
If it seems like
We're unaffected
Well, what more
Could you ask for?
So it's simple
And it's easy
You're the best thing
That I've seen
If you try hard,
You may be perfect
The lyrics of The Buck Pets's song Perfect are about the struggles of doubt, uncertainty, and how it affects the decision-making of the singer. The song opens with the singer feeling stuck, knowing that they're making a mistake but unable to prevent themselves from making it. Their longing for understanding is prevalent throughout the song, and they beg the person they're speaking to to help them get a grip on their life. "So give me some understanding if you try; you may be perfect" is a desperate plea for guidance and support. The singer seems to be in search of somebody perfect to help them make the right decisions.
The second verse continues in the same vein, with the person they're talking to coming across as mysterious and secretive. The singer is intrigued and wants to know more but can't quite put their finger on what it is they're looking for. The line "If it seems like we're unaffected, well, what more could you ask for?" implies that the singer is trying to keep their doubts and insecurities masked in front of the other person. The final verse focuses on finding a way out of this rut. The singer acknowledges that they need to start making changes to their life to move forward. Their recognition that they need to break away from their current mindset is a small step towards growth, and this newfound perspective is encouraging for the singer.
In conclusion, the lyrics of Perfect are reflective of the struggle we all face in trying to find guidance and direction. The singer's struggles with doubt and uncertainty are universal, and the message of the song is to keep pushing forward, even if you're not sure what exactly you're looking for.
