Without Love
The Burns Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The house is cold as a stone
You are here
why do I feel so alone?
I lost your heart, I lost myself along the way
One more day...
without love
All the promises and lies
whisper secrets deep inside
Tell the truth
Why can’t you look me in the eye?
One more try...

I won’t live my life without love
while you cry for the one you dream of
I’m willing to sacrifice
How much is enough?
Waiting for your touch
one more day,
without love

There’s no time for right and wrong
Holding out could only keep me holding on
Searching only for a place where I belong
To be strong
The rain falls down to wash away
All the tears I cry today
The storm is over now I’m headed for the sun
The time has come

I won’t live my life without love
while you cry for the one you dream of
I’m willing to sacrifice
How much is enough?
Waiting for your touch
one more day,
without love

I remember
we were strong yesterday
When did we let it slip away
If you can’t find it in your heart to try again
This is the end

I won’t live my life without love
while you cry for the one you dream of
This wall between us
I can’t rise above

Waiting for your touch

one more day,
without love

Overall Meaning

The Burns Sisters’ song “Without Love” is a poignant and emotive reflection on what it feels like to lose love and, with it, a sense of self. In the opening verse, the singer of the song talks about feeling lonely, even though her partner is present physically. She feels lost, having lost her former self along the way. The pre-chorus then speaks of how promises and lies fester within her like secrets, while her partner cannot look her in the eye, presumably because of guilt or shame. She wants to try again, but only if it’s worth it.

The chorus of “Without Love” speaks to the idea that love is a necessary condition for a meaningful life. The singer argues that she won’t live without love, while her partner cries for someone else. She is willing to make sacrifices, but it has to mean something. The second verse is a declaration of independence and strength. She argues that there is no room for right and wrong – only what feels true to her. Holding out is pointless; she wants to find a place where she can belong and be herself. In the end, the song takes a turn, with the singer acknowledging that she remembers a time when they were strong together but concludes that if her partner cannot find it in his heart to try again, it’s the end.
