Their music bridged the gaps between the socially and spiritually conscious folk music of Bob Dylan, the studio trickery of The Beach Boys, and the sardonic rock of The Beatles. Some of their trademark songs include pop versions of Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man and Pete Seeger’s Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season), and the originals I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better, and Eight Miles High. Throughout their career they helped forge such subgenres as folk rock, raga rock, psychedelic rock, jangle pop, and – on their 1968 classic Sweetheart of the Rodeo – country rock inviting Gram Parsons on rhythm guitar.
The original and most successful lineup consisted of Chris Hillman, David Crosby, Michael Clarke, Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. After several line-up changes (with lead singer/guitarist McGuinn as the only consistent member), they broke up in 1973.
In 1991 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and several band members launched successful solo careers after leaving the group. The most successful was David Crosby who was inducted again for his work with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Other than The Beatles, the only artist with all members inducted twice are, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Farther along we'll understand why
Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine
We'll understand it all by and by.
When we see Jesus coming in glory
When he comes from his home in the sky
Then we shall meet him in that bright mansionWe'll understand it all by and by.
Farther along we'll know all about it
Farther along we'll understand why
Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine
We'll understand it all by and by
We'll understand it all by and by.
The Byrds's song "Farther Along" is a gospel-inspired track that speaks to the belief that life's mysteries will eventually be revealed and understood in time. The lyrics suggest a comforting and hopeful message that encourages listeners to maintain a positive outlook and to continue on their life journey with faith and optimism. The song acknowledges that there are things in life that we may not understand or have answers for at the moment, but we will gain knowledge and clarity in time.
The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, as it repeats the phrase "Farther along we'll know all about it / Farther along we'll understand why" twice. This repetition emphasizes the idea that understanding will come with time and that we must be patient and trust in the process. The second verse speaks of Jesus coming in glory and the promise of meeting him in a bright mansion. This provides a religious perspective to the song, implying that there is a divine plan in place and that ultimately our journey will lead us to a place of deeper understanding and spiritual fulfillment.
Overall, "Farther Along" is a thoughtful and introspective song that encourages listeners to keep moving forward with faith and hope, even in the face of life's uncertainties.
