She Don't Care About Time
The Byrds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hallways and staircases everyday to climb
To go up to my white walled room out on the end of time
Where I can be with my love, for she is all that is mine
And she'll always be there, my love don't care about time

I laugh with her, cry with her, hold her close, she is mine
The way she tells me of her love and never is she trying
She don't have to be assured of many good things to find
And she'll always be there, my love don't care about time

Her eyes are dark and deep with love, her hair hangs long and fine
She walks with ease and all she sees is never wrong or right
And with her arms around me tight, I see her all in my mind

And she'll always be there, my love don't care about time
She'll always be there, my love don't care about time

Overall Meaning

In the lyrics to The Byrds's song She Don't Care About Time, we are presented with a narrator who takes us on a journey through hallways and staircases, until he finally reaches his destination-- a small white-walled room which seems to exist on the edge of time. It is here, he tells us, that he finds his love, and in her he has found his own sense of timelessness. Together they laugh and cry and hold each other close, and she never has to assure him of her love or of anything else for that matter.

What stands out most about this love, though, is the sense of ease that it conveys. The singer describes his lover as someone who walks with ease and never sees anything as entirely wrong or right. It's a love that seems to be characterized by simplicity and an absence of pretense-- so much so that time itself seems to lose its grip on them. In short, the lyrics to She Don't Care About Time paint a portrait of a love that exists outside of time and space, something that is both deeply personal and universal at the same time.

Worked in a record store in 1965 and was in charge of choosing the music heard on the speakers outside the store. Got fired because I played THE BYRDS WAY TOO OFTEN. I met MCGUINN a few times and told him He GOT ME FIRED FROM MY FIRST JOB!

@kevinjoseph517

SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE ALBUM

@MarigoldThyme

Gene Clark forever!💖

Did anyone catch McGuinn's nod to Bach in the guitar solo break? I certainly didn't back in 1965!

@clairehelmsley6608

Yes, i didn't get it when i bought The History of The Byrds in 1977, but i absolutely did later in life after i'd got into Bach.

@munimathbypeterfelton6251

Yeah, I heard it too! McGuinn used that riff when creating The Byrds' version of Mr. Tambourine Man melodically also.

Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring.

Should have been a single in it's own right 😊

@AnthonyMonaghan

This should have been released as an A side single in its own right. Gene's songs at this time were the best thing The Byrds recorded.

@garyjedlicka5394

Yeah. This was well documented by Byrds' biographer Johnny Rogan in Timeless Flight. Crosby was jealous of Clarke's songwriting royalties and was instrumental in keeping this song off of the album...in favor of "Wait and See"?!!
