Burning Down The House
The Cardigans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Watch out you might get what you're after
Cool babies strange but not a stranger
I'm an ordinary guy
Burning down the house

Hold tight wait till the party's over
Hold tight We're in for nasty weather
There has got to be a way
Burning down the house

Here's your ticket pack your bag: time for jumpin' overboard
The transportation is here
Close enough but not too far, Maybe you know where you are
Fightin' fire with fire

All wet hey you might need a raincoat
Shakedown dreams walking in broad daylight
Three hun-dred six-ty five de-grees
Burning down the house

It was once upon a place sometimes I listen to myself
Gonna come in first place
People on their way to work baby what did you except
Gonna burst into flame

My house S'out of the ordinary
That's might Don't want to hurt nobody
Some things sure can sweep me off my feet
Burning down the house

No visible means of support and you have not seen nothing yet
Everything's stuck together

I don't know what you expect staring into the TV set
Fighting fire with fire..

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Cardigans' song "Burning Down The House" present a series of disconnected images and phrases that don't necessarily cohere into a single coherent narrative. Instead, it seems like the song is meant to capture a feeling of building energy and explosive release, with vocalist Nina Persson delivering each line with a sense of mounting urgency and chaotic energy.

The first verse opens with the warning, "Watch out you might get what you're after," suggesting that there are dangerous consequences to be faced in pursuing one's desires. The line "cool babies strange but not a stranger" seems to play on the idea that people are complex and multifaceted, while the repetition of the line "burning down the house" suggests that something explosive and transformative is happening.

The second verse adds to this sense of danger and mounting tension, with lines like "hold tight We're in for nasty weather" and "fightin' fire with fire." The image of "shanakedown dreams walking in broad daylight" conjures up a sense of confusion and disorientation, while the repeated reference to "burning down the house" suggests that this potential chaos is both terrifying and alluring.

Overall, "Burning Down The House" seems to channel a sense of primal, wild energy, with its repeated references to fire and destruction suggesting a need to break free from the constraints of everyday life and experience something intense and transformative.

Nina has a fantastic voice and Sir Tom is an absolute legend. I'm sure David Byrne is proud of this cover version.

I'm curious to hear what you think of the Paramore version that just releases then

@rngod2121

@@Glenn_3 😍 Thank you for the recommendation! I listened to that, then the Wet Leg version of "C'est Comme Ça", which led me to Paramore's "This is Why", (which had me cranking up my McIntosh Amp...
And now I am perusing the Paramore greatest Hits. I have a feeling it is going to keep me busy for a bit! 🙂

@Glenn_3

This is great. I love it that Tom Jones stays relevant by teaming up with current artists. His voice is one of few of the old guard that has survived beautifully.

@scottbieser

Whoever thought to pair up Jones and the Cardigans to cover this song is a freakin' genius.

@markpetersen2469

They had hallucinations from the heart ❤
