For What It's Worth
The Cardigans feat. Tom Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One, two, three, four

Hey baby come round
Keep holding me down
And I'll be keeping you up tonight.

The four letter word got stuck in my head
The dirtiest word that I've ever said
It's making me feel alright.

For what it's worth I love you
And what is worse I really do
Oh what is worse I'm gonna run run run
'Till the sweetness gets to you
And what is worse I love you!

Hey please baby come back
There'll be no more loving attack
And I'll be keeping it cool tonight.

The four letter word is out of my head
Come on around get back in my bed
Keep making me feel alright.

For what it's worth I like you
And what is worse I really do
Things have been worse
And we had fun fun fun
'Till I said I love you
And what is worse I really do!

For what it's worth I love you
And what is worse I really do.
Oh

For what it's worth I love you
And what is worse I really do.
Oh

For what it's worth I love you
And what is worse I really do.

Overall Meaning

The Cardigans' For what its worth presents a romantic and ambiguous story of a couple who are trying to balance their passion and love towards each other. In the beginning, the male singer asks his lover to stay with him and promises to keep her happy. He then starts to think about his love for her and how it is making him feel better. He confesses his love for her, admitting that he loves her deeply and will do anything for her. The woman then leaves him, but he asks her to come back, and he will keep his love in check. He realizes that he cannot keep his love from overflowing, and he confesses his love again. The last repetition of "For what it's worth, I love you" reinforces his love for her and its realness.

The song's lyrics depict how powerful love can be, even when it is deemed wrong or hurting in some way. It also shows how love can be uncontrollable, with no power to stop it, even if somebody wants to. The use of the four-letter word is symbolic of the intensity of their feelings and is a reminder that it is never too late to confess or appreciate someone you love.

Nina has a fantastic voice and Sir Tom is an absolute legend. I'm sure David Byrne is proud of this cover version.

@Glenn_3

I'm curious to hear what you think of the Paramore version that just releases then

@rngod2121

@@Glenn_3 😍 Thank you for the recommendation! I listened to that, then the Wet Leg version of "C'est Comme Ça", which led me to Paramore's "This is Why", (which had me cranking up my McIntosh Amp...
And now I am perusing the Paramore greatest Hits. I have a feeling it is going to keep me busy for a bit! 🙂

This is great. I love it that Tom Jones stays relevant by teaming up with current artists. His voice is one of few of the old guard that has survived beautifully.

@scottbieser

Whoever thought to pair up Jones and the Cardigans to cover this song is a freakin' genius.

@markpetersen2469

They had hallucinations from the heart ❤
