1) The Cardinals formed in Baltimore in 1946 as the Mellotones by Leon Hardy (bass), Merredith Brothers (tenor), Donald Johnson (baritone) and Ernie Warren (lead). Jack Aydelotte (tenor, guitar) was added and they signed to Atlantic in 1951. Atlantic renamed them the Cardinals to avoid confusion with another Mellotones signed to Columbia. First single ‘Shouldn’t I know?’ was released in May 1951 and reached number 7 on the R’n’B charts. Third single ‘Wheel of fortune’, a cover of a white hit, reached number 6 on the R’n’B charts in 1952. Ernie Warren was drafted and replaced by Leander Tarver, then James Brown (not the famous one), but was back in time for their last hit, ‘The door is still open’, which reached number 4 R’n’B in 1954. The Cardinals released 12 singles for Atlantic and toured throughout this period, finally splitting at the beginning of 1957. Ernie Warren formed a new Cardinals in 1958. Moving way to slow for whatever they've been carryin'
I've been working hard ever since I was a kid
Trains moan in my sleep
Seems like something is always moving
Trains moan in my sleep when I'm trying to go to bed
Moving way to slow for whatever they've been carryin'
Trains moan in my sleep
Seems like something is always moving
You know I don't always show
What it is I'm feeling, baby doll
You know that the things that you want
Aren't the things that you need
All the things that you will last [??]
I'm gaining on them trains and fast
Trains moan in my sleep
Into the future and out of the past
Into the future and out of the past
Trains moan in my head when I'm trying to go to sleep
Throwin' rocks at the window
When the sun's crawling up the sheets
I've been working hard ever since I was a boy
Trains moan in my sleep
Gnawing on me like I was a chew toy
You know I don't always show
Whatever I'm feeling, baby doll
You know that the things that you love
And the things that you want
Are the things that you need will last
I'm gaining on them trains and fast
Trains moan in my sleep
Into the future and out of the past
Into the future and out of the past
Into the future and out of the past
Into the future and out of the past
Trains moan in my head
When I'm trying to go to sleep
Moving way to slow for whatever they've been carryin'
I've been working hard ever since I was a kid
Trains moan in my sleep
Seems like I'm always moving
Trains moan in my sleep
Seems like I'm always moving
The Cardinals' song Train is a contemplative piece about the persistence of trains seemingly loudly moaning in the singer's sleep. The singer says that these trains move too slowly, and the singer has been working hard since childhood. The idea of trains in the song symbolizes the sense of being stuck in life, where things are constantly moving but not progressing enough, and how the past seems to be always present in one's mind, hauntingly like the moaning in his sleep.
The lyrics touch on the desire to show one's true feelings to someone, but the fear of being vulnerable or misunderstood. The idea of needs versus wants is mentioned, and how sometimes, what one wants to have is not necessarily what one's life requires. The trains going into the future and out of the past suggest a better tomorrow, but the singer seems to be at peace, accepting his current state.
