I kept my Carpenters CD right next to my Led Zeppelin collection for years. I grew up listening to Karen Carpenter sing away my blues as a poor kid with an abusive stepfather in the late 70’s/early 80’s. When she died I was heartbroken. I still am. She lost her battle here even though she helped so many others win theirs. RIP Karen. ❤

The crazy part is that despite her anorexia-related health problems, NONE of them affected her voice. She delivered at the top of her game no matter what she sang. There were times she looked gaunt and sickly, but that voice stayed rich and healthy. And her brother claims she did this one in ONE TAKE. THAT is awesome!

When I was in Vietnam, I wrote her on a bet I wouldn't hear from her. I did, and we corresponded with each other over the next year, I was 17 and in love with her. Not just her music and her voice but the girl behind the mask, I was devastated by her death. I have been married for over 44 years and neither my wife nor my children know I have her letters because they are my private memories and when I pass away they will be buried with me.

What an amazing story, you are so fortunate. Says something about the real person that she took the time. Certainly share your pain at her passing, I was sat in my car listening to the news when I heard that she had died. I can remember the time and place like it was yesterday, sat there and and just cried, her voice and songs really do rest deeply in your soul. I’m 62 now, if one of her songs comes on the radio I still feel the emotional impact of that loss, no other artist past or present makes me feel like this. Understand completely why you have not shared the letters, if your anything like me, it shows a very vulnerable and sensitive side which you my not wish the reveal. Just imagine if your wife ‘got it’ and shared the feelings you have, could be a magical moment of understanding between you. My partner would never understand......

I can't fathom how I've never heard this song before today, Wed., January 11th, 2023, at 09:40 a.m. Her voice was unlike any other. Yet, one thing which I think never gets credited enough is that the musicianship was as perfect as her voice was. And not just her brother, but all their musicians. The music always complimented her voice So Perfectly, in such a heart-tugging way. I think it's absolutely fitting that they scrolled the musician's names at the end of the video. I’m 71 and have loved Karen Carpenter since their first charted hit. Like you, I get misty when I even think of her passing. Their music is comparable to watching a train wreck. No Karen recorded it just hours before she died. Karen still sang like this wailing her little body was shutting down 😭
And she wasn't happy with this take, Karen wanted to sing it again but Richard wouldn't let her. He told her that she could sing it again tomorrow and tomorrow never ever came for her.
Karen only sang it only once.

Me too.....my 27 year old niece died of the same thing. She had a pace maker because of a heart murmur....since she was 5. 3 days after the COVID-19 shot.....she passed. But she did have anorexia😢

I can't say enough about this phenominal lady and her God-given heavenly voice. When I first heard the Carpenters, I was hooked and fell in love with Karen's voice and the musical richness that accompanied her. All were gifted musicians. At that time I decided to make music my career. I retired and I still listen to the Carpenters almost every day. Their music is eternal!!!

There has never been and never will be again a voice like Karen Carpenter's. I think what touches people is the depth of her vocal quality. Tonally deep, crystal clear and so genuine, Karen's voice penetrates your soul. Her death at the young age of 32 was one of the music industry's greatest tragedies. Though she was certainly successful, she had much untapped potential which is evident in some of her lesser known songs like "I Can Dream, Can't I" and "Ordinary Fool." She will forever remain in the top ranks of female vocalists.

Her voice was pitch-perfect. What a gift! I listened to her all the time when I was in school. I would go to the library and listen to her records...I knew every word to every song. I was devastated when I heard the news that she passed away. It still makes me cry! I wrote to her fan club and I was sent a postcard after she passed and it just made me cry and cry. Such a waste. I pray I'll get to hear her in heaven someday.

I was a young student when Karen left us. I cried for days. And "until now" she is the most unforgotten singer I ever heard. Her songs ment so much to me, for every situation there was a song. I still miss her.

I fell in love with Karen's voice in the early 70's as a teenager. I owned every Carpenter's record. When I heard she had died on the radio I stayed home from work for 3 days crying, drinking, crying and playing her records.

What truly amazes me about this final recording in Karen Carpenters Career is how exquisitely she sings here. Even though her body must have been ravaged by her eating disorder. ? I cant seem to hear or find any loss of vocal dynamics in her perfect voice. other musicians abuse themselves and you can you can hear the loss of quality in the performance. Unfortunately even though Karen's beautiful voice wasn't impacted by her depriving her body of it's basic nutritional needs her heart couldn't withstand it. And She will forever hold a place in my heart as one of the truest purist singers that has ever lived GOD BLESS KAREN CARPENTER.

agreed! the most beautiful, rich, intimate, moving voice i have ever heard.. her voice is and always will be romance and love, love both looked for, found and lost.... and it wasn't just the sound of her voice, but how she used it.. her phrasing and emoting, her absolute perfect diction and enunciation for every syllable for every word for every song she ever sang (that in itself makes her stand out from nearly everyone!), how she told and acted out the story of the song.. THEE epitome of the singer who sang TO the listener NOT AT the listener!...

Heartbreakingly beautiful. She was such a vast talent and, as with so many of our stunningly talented, she died so very young and so tragically. Tomorrow, I turn 59 years old and Karen Carpenter has stayed with me through all these years and her voice and the legacy she left behind will endure forever. RIP.

Karen Carpenter is my favorite singer of all time. Her incomparable voice was smooth as silk and resonated with rich emotion. Richard was the genius behind the Carpenters sound; a master at arranging, writing and producing, showcasing her unique talent. But, it was Karen and her heaven-sent voice that made the Carpenters the stars they were. I remember first hearing her on the radio in 1970. It took my breath away.

Perfection, and not only Karen's voice or Richard's arrangement, but let's not forget the songwriters, Roger Nichols and Dean Pitchford. Their lyrics and melody lines could not be more succinct. On a side note, a friend of mine sang at her wedding.

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was only 16 years old. For whatever reason her voice just struck me and I remember how much I loved this song. Soon after I became a closet Carpenters fan. Buying all over the albums and playing them over and over again. The day I heard she passed I was alone in my room and my heart just broke. It was the first time I knew what real loss felt like. I quietly just cried in my room and trying to contain my emotions. Her voice even now in DEC 2020 is just a powerful as it was then. She will never be forgotten. A true artist gone way too soon. Karen Carpenter your a legend and I miss you deeply.

The industry suffered a major loss in her passing so young, I was blessed to grow up with such amazing songs to enjoy. I still play the Carpenters to this day... on my presstine vinyl..... She was a very beautiful woman inside and outside and she sure had the voice of an angel. It was so sad to hear that she died at such a young age from such a terrible illness. The way this lady sings can make it feel like she is singing right to you personally. From the sound of her voice and her music she sounds as if she was saying that she saw you across a crowded room and wanted to get to know you better so she poured her heart out to you in a song. She was so dearly loved and is so sadly missed. I think that her music and her memories will live on forever

As the years fly by, I recall when my kids were 5 and under, when Mom was out for the evening, I would put Karen's record on the stereo, gather the kids on my lap on the rocking chair and rock them to sleep with her singing. I give thanks every day that I had the sense to do that. What better pure love than my 3 kids in my arms and Karen singing. I love you Karen.

The only problem they had is their early material was so classic, such brilliant music, it almost worked against them in later years. Karen's gorgeous voice never failed all the way to her tragic end. This song, "NOW", is an exception, but even though Karen's voice was top notch, and the production was top notch, (even the Ramone project was produced with love), it was the material that was not up to scratch? It is hard to find, or write great songs consecutively going into your 12th/13th year. "Lulls" did happen to many artists. It's certain that they would have produced at least two gems on each forthcoming album. I just feel 1980 and 1981 were not overall good years for the material. No matter what struggles either of The Carpenters may have had, they both delivered their great work as they always had. It just was her solo & their 1981 release both lacked consistently great tunes.

I am 67 and loved her voice from the beginning. I understand the struggle she went through as I have suffered since the age of 3 with the same eating disorder. There is no cure. I wish she was still with us making her beautiful music. May God keep her in his loving arms.
