Rainy Days and Mondays
The Carpenters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Talkin' to myself and feelin' old
Sometimes I'd like to quit
Nothin' ever seems to fit
Hangin' around
Nothin' to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down

What I've got they used to call the blues
Nothin' is really wrong
Feelin' like I don't belong
Walkin' around
Some kind of lonely clown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down

Funny, but it seems I always wind up here with you
Nice to know somebody loves me
Funny, but it seems that it's the only thing to do
Run and find the one who loves me (the one who loves me)

What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out (talk it out)
We know what it's all about
Hangin' around (hangin' around)
Nothin' to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down

Funny, but it seems that it's the only thing to do (only thing to do)
Run and find the one who loves me (ooh)

What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out (to talk it out)
We know what it's all about
Hangin' around (hangin' around)
Nothin' to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down
Hangin' around (hangin' around)
Nothin' to do but frown

Rainy days and Mondays always get
Me down

Overall Meaning

The Carpenters’ hit song “Rainy Days and Mondays” is about feeling down and lonely. The singer is talking to himself and feeling old and tired. He admits that he sometimes wishes he could quit because nothing ever seems to fit. He is just hanging around with nothing to do but frown. Rainy days and Mondays make him feel even worse.

The second verse reveals that the singer is feeling like he doesn’t belong anywhere. He is walking around like a lonely clown, feeling blue. However, the chorus takes a slightly hopeful turn. The singer says that it’s nice to know that somebody loves him. He also says that he always winds up back with this person, as if running back to the one who loves him is the only thing he can do to feel better.

The song speaks to the universal feeling of isolation and sadness that many people have experienced. It’s a relatable feeling that can come from a variety of life circumstances. The Carpenters succeed at distilling that feeling of melancholy and loneliness into a catchy tune that has stood the test of time.
