The Carpenters' melodic pop charted a record-breaking score of hit recordings on the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, becoming leading sellers in the soft rock, easy listening and adult contemporary genres. The Carpenters had three #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen #1 hits on the Adult Contemporary Chart (see The Carpenters discography). In addition, they had twelve top 10 singles (including their #1 hits). To date, The Carpenters' album and single sales total more than 100 million units.
During their fourteen-year career, The Carpenters recorded eleven albums, five of which contained top 10 singles (Close to You, Carpenters, A Song for You, Now & Then and Horizon), thirty-one singles, five television specials, and one short-lived television series. They toured in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands and Belgium. Their recording career ended with Karen's death on February 4, 1983. Karen passed away after cardiac arrest due to complications of anorexia nervosa. Extensive news coverage of the circumstances surrounding her death increased public awareness of the consequences of eating disorders.
Their first recordings were not successful, and the recording studio that was recording them, dropped them. That's when their 'savior' came in. Herb Alpert of A&M records heard a couple of their songs and said that he felt that they had good potential. Thanks to him, and his ability to see/hear quality when it appears, we had the GREAT performers of The Carpenters.
Where Do I Go From Here
The Carpenters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lying on a bed of leaves
Watching clouds up through the trees
You said our love was more than time
It's colder now
The trees are bare and nights are long
I can't get warm since you've been gone
I can't stop singin' sad songs
Tell me where do I go from here?
You said you'd take me through the years
So where do I go from here?
Lover's plans
Like fallin' leaves on windy days
Flutter past and they fly away
I though I knew you oh so well
And I need you now
I need to fell you in the night
I need to your smile so warm and bright
I wish my mind could let you go
Repeat (*)
You said you'd take me through the years
So where do I go from here?
The Carpenters' song "Where Do I Go From Here" is a melancholic reflection on a lost love. The song begins with the singer reminiscing about autumn days lying on a bed of leaves, staring at the clouds up in the trees while being told that their love was more enduring than time itself. However, the tone quickly shifts as the singer admits to feeling colder since their lover's departure, and struggling to let go as they continue singing sad songs. The chorus poses a desperate question: Where do they go from here now that their lover is no longer around? The second verse admits to the transient nature of lover's plans, which can flutter away like fall leaves on a windy day. The singer confesses to feeling the need to see their lover's smile and feel their warmth, and they wish they could let their lover go.
The song's lyrics are straightforward, describing the singer's heartbreak and uncertainty about the future. However, the song's simple melody and Karen Carpenter's iconic voice elevate it to a soulful contemplation on lost love. The orchestral backing is delicate and expressive, supporting the lyrics while never overpowering them. "Where Do I Go From Here" is a classic ballad, timeless in its subject matter and execution, and its emotional resonance has made it a favorite for many listeners over the years.

My God. This woman's voice awakens feelings that I cannot explain. I'm in love with her. It looks like she whispers the song in my lap. Karen didn't have to shout the song. She was on another level. Current singers can't hold a candle for KAREN
