The Carpenters' melodic pop charted a record-breaking score of hit recordings on the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, becoming leading sellers in the soft rock, easy listening and adult contemporary genres. The Carpenters had three #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen #1 hits on the Adult Contemporary Chart (see The Carpenters discography). In addition, they had twelve top 10 singles (including their #1 hits). To date, The Carpenters' album and single sales total more than 100 million units.
During their fourteen-year career, The Carpenters recorded eleven albums, five of which contained top 10 singles (Close to You, Carpenters, A Song for You, Now & Then and Horizon), thirty-one singles, five television specials, and one short-lived television series. They toured in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands and Belgium. Their recording career ended with Karen's death on February 4, 1983. Karen passed away after cardiac arrest due to complications of anorexia nervosa. Extensive news coverage of the circumstances surrounding her death increased public awareness of the consequences of eating disorders.
Their first recordings were not successful, and the recording studio that was recording them, dropped them. That's when their 'savior' came in. Herb Alpert of A&M records heard a couple of their songs and said that he felt that they had good potential. Thanks to him, and his ability to see/hear quality when it appears, we had the GREAT performers of The Carpenters.
You're The One

You're the one I always dream of
Ev'ry line of your face
Is sketched so plain inside my heart
You've grown so deep inside of me
You're everything I feel and see
And you're the one, you're the one I love
I can feel when you're beside me
All that's right, all that's wrong
Suddenly becomes so clear
My heart has overtaken me
With feelings you awake in me
And you're the one, you're the one I love
Only you could move me enough to believe in love one more time
All I need to know for tomorrow is that you're mine
Mine for a lifetime
If our friends all around
Find it hard to understand us
You and I understand the other one so very well
And that's what I've been looking for
So I keep coming back for more
'Cause you're the one, you're the one I love
You're the one, you're the one I love
In The Carpenters's song "You're The One", the lyrics speak of a deep and undying love that the singer has for someone. The opening lines of "Every night, every day, you're the one I always dream of" shows that the feeling is constant and unrelenting. The singer's emotional attachment is further emphasized with the lines "You've grown so deep inside of me, you're everything I feel and see". The lover has taken over every aspect of the singer's being and is the center of their world. The chorus repeats the sentiment that the lover is the one and only, "And you're the one, you're the one I love".
The second verse shows a deeper connection and understanding between the two, "All that's right, all that's wrong, suddenly becomes so clear". The singer finds clarity and purpose in the relationship, their heart has been overtaken with intense emotions brought about by the person they love. The bridge speaks to the transformative power of love, "Only you could move me enough to believe in love one more time, all I need to know for tomorrow is that you're mine, mine for a lifetime".
The song is a beautiful and romantic declaration of the power of love to change a person's life forever. It speaks to the deep emotional bond that can form between two individuals and how that bond can guide and sustain them throughout their lives.
