We absolutely tried it on our necks before we ever put it on the dogs!!! Everyone should. However…. We bought the nice one with a 1-10 level option, and is only activated by us pushing the button when they got out of control, not every time they made a noise. If you live in an apartment this is a must for training. We easily handled a level 5 on our human necks but the (large) dogs have never experienced higher than a 2. They are way more deterred by the “warning” alarm than the “shock” collar.

Excessive barking is way different. I dog should not be doing that, and there are many people who don’t choose to have dogs who’s lives can be affects by others having dogs that bark like crazy. It’s one thing when your dog barks to communicate and another when it’s a dog that barks when the wind blows. I’ve seen way to many people with there dog going crazy in their car and they completely ignore it. The girl we took in will freak out but we have her lay down so she can’t see whatever is making her bark. Plus if there are really close to you it can be super loud and actually really hurt your ears. And saying don’t get a dog if you don’t like barking is ridiculous because usually it’s not just regular barking. Most dogs that are properly socialized as pups don’t bark at everything.

Saying that the dog is calmed down after being shocked is so ignorant. What you really mean is that the place is calm once the barking stops. Upon being shocked the dog is reminded to shut up or else it will be shocked again. Lmao, I have a shock collar for my horse, I never had to put it on him but we thought we might have to because of his aggression towards my other horse, but before I even thought of putting it on him I tested it out on myself first. First my arm, and I could hardly feel that, so I turned it up a bit and put it on my neck. It didn't hurt, it was more of a slight pinching feeling. As long as the shock collars aren't set too high they really don't hurt the dogs, or in my case, horses.

It doesn’t hurt. You’ve REALLY gotta turn that thing up to make you jolt backward or feel a sharp jab. And like others have said, it also has a vibration feature….it’s just meant to get the dogs attention and allow them to make a decision quickly.

exactly! our trainer made my dad hold it and used the shock and my dad described it as being lightly tapped by a pen. she actually said the vibration is worse; it scares the dog bc they don’t know where it’s coming grom

Honestly Im not a fan of bark collars, but my dachshund barks at EVERY LITTLE TINY SOUND in the house and then proceeds to KEEP barking until she has investigated every nook and cranny of the house. Whereas I appreciate her valiant effort to protect the home, its overkill and wakes us up often in the night. We're also in a small apartment, so..somethings gotta be done. I might get a bark collar, no amount of redirection will get that stubborn ween to quiet down. Like they say dachshunds are stubborn dogs, thats a severe understatement lol

I was house sitting years ago, and the family had bark collars on their dogs. I took the collars off, walked them regularly, and played with them to exhaust them. They only barked when we ordered pizza and the pizza guy rang the doorbell. And I wasn't even like, playing that hard with them. I was throwing a ball down the hallway while doing homework and studying.

Agreed the barking may just be a bigger issue. However I’m guessing the people that mostly use these collars don’t usually have a lot of time to walk them since they don’t seem to have enough time to simply train them to not bark. I’ve heard other breeds bark more than others so maybe that’s why they use it too. But idk I’ve never had dogs before. This should be like an absolute last resort option IMO. And maybe only be a noise instead of a shock or heavy vibration

@em sa this is a fair argument. And I would be very inclined to agree had I not basically babysat the dogs. Both of whom were incredibly chill, and just had energy to burn. However, the family spent a lot of time at home and just seemed to ignore the dogs. I went back the next year, those dogs didn't forget. Didn't bark at pizza the next year and had both the dogs sleep in the living room with me while I fell asleep watching TV.
My uncle tried to give his beautiful husky a shock collar as well. I told him to put it on himself to see how he'd like it. He threw it out the next day.
I work with a lot of animals, be it volunteering or just family pets.
If people don't have time for the new addition to the family, gift it to someone who will take the time for it.

@star I always follow the mindset that if you can't take care of them, don't get them. Because you're just adding to the problem.
I volunteered at shelters and stables, and because of that small connection, I managed to get a lot of dogs homes with horse owners who would bring them with them to see the horses. The dogs loved it. Heck, one summer a few years ago, stable owner rented a massive trailer, and had us pile all the dogs in and let them run around the horse arenas and around the barn while we were cleaning out stalls. I think 20+ of those dogs got adopted out by the end of the week. And they're still living happy healthy lives.
Animals, just like people take time. And if someone's not willing to commit the time and effort into that animal, then they shouldn't be adopting animals to begin with.

As a last resort we got one of these last month .. CHANGED OUR LIFE. All the negative Annie's in the comment section don't pass the vibe check 😒 our 8 year old dog has the life of luxury. But every night and all night she would just bark, continuously for no reason. This is something we had accepted, used earplugs and warned neighbours about. Until our baby was born and the barking kept him up all night and we couldn't wear ear plugs anymore. Honestly, we put this on her, and on the FIRST NIGHT she slept like a baby, on her back, loving life. She hasn't barked since ✌️💖

My husband and I did this with an "electric" collar. I held it and he raised the power to the highest one. Thankfully it doesn't actually shock. It just vibrates hard. It feels like one of those trick pens that surprise you when you pull on it.

My mom said my dad got a shock collar when they first got our old dog, and he decided to test it out by putting it on the highest one lmao. It was only his arm, but my mom still makes fun of him for starting at the highest instead of the levels they would actually use.

That's how they are supposed to work! I used to be a dog trainer and e collars are the absolute best tool you can use if you go out with your dog a lot. It's not about fear, it's about tapping them out of something they are super focused on, so they can focus on you

@TheShinyBountyHunter Than we have different opinions of abuse. If the dog is in pain, yes I consider that abuse. If the dog is surprised by a tingle than no I do not consider that abuse. Also if people didn't teach their dogs not to bark at everything than there would be plenty more dogs in shelters. I doubt neighbors in apartments would stand for the constant noise. It is natural for a dog to bark. There are many dogs that bark too much.

My dog is basically a toddler in a dogs body and she will look you dead in the eyes and steal a shoe and then go running so we got her a training collar and it has a remote to control it and you can make it beep and vibrate and there’s a shock option too but we have that on the lowest setting and only use it if she’s in danger or gets too wild while playing and then get aggressive

Although I believe that this is quite unnecessary, training your dog to be selective and attentive to what they bark at is not a bad idea. Teaching your dog the difference between a random squirrel and an actual attacker not only saves you hours of barking non-stop, but also improves your dog's capability to identify *actual threats and to be able to regulate when to chill and when to be on alert. It is entirely possible to both have a dog that is your pet and to have a dog that has a duty besides being your loyal and loving companion. And I believe that training your dog via non-negative and constructive methods (as well as from an early age) can improve both you and your pets life.

I do believe that something like this would be teaching the dog to not bark at all though. Considering they are probably trying to prevent the dog from barking at simple things, it’s probably on all day. Teaching a dog to be weary of random strangers at the door is predictive on some cases. This would just train it to not bark at anything which could be bad

I basically my dogs now only bark if

1. The door is being knocked or like anything that is entering from the door

2. When they are hungry (surprisingly they don't do it continuously, well- until I fed them)

3. When I walk and something is behind me (this is just their natural reaction for some reason)
