Hark The Herald Angels Sing
The Cathedral Choirs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King,
peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconcile.
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,

Join the triumph of the skies;
with the angelic host proclaim,
'Christ is born in Bethlehem'
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

Hail, the incarnate deity,
Pleased as Man with to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.

Hail, the heaven-born Prince of peace!
Hail the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,

Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the suns of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of the song "Hark! the herald angels sing" is a call to rejoice and celebrate the birth of Jesus, the newly born King. The angels are singing about the peace and mercy that have come down to earth with the birth of Jesus. The mankind has been reconciled with God and sinners are now in unison with the divine. The nations are called to join the celebration and proclaim the good news from the skies that Christ has been born in Bethlehem. The stanza repeats the phrase, "Glory to the newborn King," which highlights the arrival of the savior and encourages everyone to praise and worship him.

The second stanza establishes the divine nature of Jesus and highlights his birth as a miraculous event when the Word of God became flesh. Christ is identified as the highest heaven adored, who was always the Lord and will continue to be so forever. The phrase "veiled in flesh the Godhead see" is the manifestation of the incarnation where God empties himself and takes the form of a man. The hymn expresses that through Jesus, God was pleased to dwell among men and live as one of them. The stanza ends with the proclamation, "Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King" re-echoing the joyous announcement of the first stanza.

The final stanza of the song pays homage to Jesus, who is hailed as the heaven-born Prince of peace and the Sun of righteousness. Jesus is the light and life who brings salvation and healing to all. The wise men saw a star in the sky, which guided them to the birthplace of Jesus, and now Jesus is walking among his people, promising eternal life to those who accept him. He is the savior who has come to redeem mankind and offer new life to all who follow him. The hymn concludes with the final proclamation: "Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King." These concluding words encourage the listeners to rejoice in the birth of Jesus and praise him as the savior of the world.

God bless you all. I’ve been a believer in Christ my whole life. I prayed almost every night, but haven’t been to church seriously in many years. Tonight I stumbled upon this song on tv. It’s helped me renew my relationship with Christ. Whoever you are, wherever you are please know that you are loved. Peace and all the best for 2022.
