The group was established in the early 1950's at St. Anthony of Padua school in the Bronx. The group consisted of Arlene Smith (lead), Sonia Goring, Rene Minus, Jackie Landry Jackson and Lois Harris. They got their name from a rival school, St. Frances de Chantal.

They were discovered by Richard Barrett, lead singer of the Valentines and eventually signed to End Records. Their first single was "He's Gone" (Pop #71) in August 1957. In January 1958 they released their second single, "Maybe" (#15 Pop; #2 R&B). Several other singles were released on End, though none as successful as "Maybe."

The group was dropped by End in 1959, and Arlene Smith decided to go solo. Lois left to pursue a college education. In 1960, Annette Smith (no relation) replaced Arlene and the group went to Carlton Records, where they had their second huge hit with "Look in My Eyes" (#14 pop, #6 R&B). Several other singles followed and the group switched labels several times. Personnel changed throughout the 60's, with their final single released in 1970.

Arlene fronted a new group of Chantels in the 1970s for oldies shows and continues to perform. The remaining original Chantels reformed as well and hired Noemi (Ami) Ortiz as their new lead singer. Jackie Landry died in 1997.

The Chantels were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.

I grew up at the Jersey shore (Red Bank, Asbury Park) and we got NY stations. WINS (Murray the K) was my favorite for oldies (his Swingin' Soiree). South Jersey rec'd the Philly signals but a lot of students my year (1970) at Rutgers were from South Jersey and some of their favorite songs were different - The Blue Notes (before Harold Melvin's name came first) recorded My Hero, never played in NY. The Dreamlovers were big, Amazons and Coyotes.

Back to the girl groups, Maybe was sometimes in the Top 5, always in the Top 10. The top 3 of golden oldies almost included Earth Angel, In the Still of the Night and Tonite Tonite. Come Go With Me was up there too.

Here's a cool link to the Top 50 GIRL GROUPS of the 1950's - I've only heard about 1/3 of these songs. The Shirelles made the Top 10 with Dedicated to the One I Love; I Met Him on a Sunday came in at #12. (now that was doo wop, nonsense syllables) from 1958 but maybe their best song, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, wasn't included because it wasn't released until late 1960. Guess what song was #1 - MAYBE and the Chantels made the Top 13 five times. So how can they be left out of the HOF. Mr. Lee by the Bobbettes came in at #2, girl group r&b, but #5 was Lonely Nights by The Hearts (1955), probably the first all-girl group to sing a real r&b song. Baby Washington, a great and often overlooked soul singer in the 1960's, sang harmony vocals (she was only 15), and was later a member of The Jaynetts.

She actually passed away in a car accident with her best friend senior year. I agree! I am in my 30s but I have loved this music since I was a kid. My parents brought me up it and we would dance in the living room for hours while my dad would play drums during upbeat songs. I am so glad I was able to experience and enjoy this fantastic music. You know good music. Good music does not seem to exist much at all lately.

Imagine me, a current artist refining his vocal skills studying the 'masters' of the past. Then they ask, "Why are your vocals so smooth?"
Because I know true vocalization started HERE. They didn't have all the stuff we have today and they sounded fantastic. How is this possible?

In THOSE days, you actually had to be able to sing to get a contract, not based on how sexy you are. I went to the source, hence= I'm badass.

I'm 66, got 2 brothers 1 is 80 the other 77. I grew up listening to the birth of Rock n Roll, Doo Wop, Elvis Surf music R&B Motown, Beatles, Stones, 70s Rock East LA oldies Metal , Punk Funk, Disco, Alternative, , Sublime to Operation Ivy, the music that has been in my life has been superb, this beautiful song was part of my early childhood. I'm 17 yrs old and I absolutely LOVE 50s and 60s music! (: I can listen to these songs all day long. I'm so happy this music is still around for me and others to listen to. These songs are truly what music was and is!

ElizabethV One of the great qualities of that era of R&R was most songs had a story line in them. The older style of the romantic was still alive. The songs had a lot of boy/girl content in the words and emotions. Some songs sounded like they were directed to a specific person, and you could pretend to be that person. There was a lot of sincerity, respect, and innocence in social relations (mostly). That's pretty much gone and replaced by today's screaming singers, monotonus repetition, and bed-hopping stories. About every 10 years music would shift to another style as other kids came of age with different likes and ideas.

I remember hearing "Maybe" on Saturday Night when they played the oldies on WABC It was 1963 and five years back was ancient and I loved it so I got the EL in the Bronx and took the subway to the Village to the "House of Oldie" They had a huge collection later I found out there was a closer place in the subway station at 42st. and 6th. ave. Anyhow I began to buy oldies until I had hundreds and this was one of my favorites although there were so many more With the Beatles and Stones coming my friends couldn't understand why I listened to this stuff but I liked both and why not?

Besides my sister, there never was a person I could talk to about "Maybe" then I finally found a friend, my age, who also loves it. Yes, I agree...we don't have to be stuck in one period. I loved music that was out way before I was born (including classical) and now I try to keep up with (some) current music. Love what Pharrell Williams and the U.N. has done with "Happy". It's like loving people: you have room for way more than one. Plus I get a kick out of surprising people with some knowledge of what's current. "PS, I Love You" is another favourite.

This song is one of the most played from 1958 I was born in 1962 and I heard it in the early 70's when my dad born in 1936 played it. In my opinion it is absolutely huge !!

I'm 67 now and I have listened to these songs forever I used to love Motown Gordy records I grew up listening because my mom and dad would play them I think they had great taste in music and I love all kinds of music from country Hawaiian Mexican but Motown was a special thing in my heart and of course disco very white Donna Summers Carol Douglas you know who they are if you're a fan
