HISTORY
The band was founded in Los Angeles in 2004 as a trio featuring Abigail Chapin, Lily Chapin and their sister Jessica Craven. After the release of their first full-length record, the Lake Bottom LP in 2008, Jessica left the band to start a family. Abigail and Lily, now a duo, recorded and released the aptly titled follow-up Two to critical acclaim.
The Chapin Sisters spent 2010 touring the world with She & Him (M. Ward & Zooey Deschanel), pulling double duty as part of the band and performing nightly as the opening act.

Hey, I've seen that look before
No need to say no more
You wanna come over
How, how can we still pretend that we will just be friends under the covers?
Your hair on my shoulder that all feelin' takes over
And it may not be right, but then again it might
So I guess it's fine, just one more time
One more late night, I sneak out the back with you
Now that the party's through we look for another
I wonder if it was your idea that we should end up here, watching the night disappear
Your hair on my shoulder that all feelin' takes over
There's no turnin' back this late at night
And it may not be right, but then again it might
So I guess it's fine, just one more time
You're sleeping sound, our legs entwined
The sunlight is sneaking in between the blinds
I've gotta go, I've gotta go
Now it's morning, you're walkin' me to my car
Don't worry it's not that far
I guess I'll see you at the bar
And later, if we can stay just friends, then this would never end
You wanna come over?
Your hair on my shoulder that all feelin' takes over
There's no turnin' back this late at night
And it may not be right, but then again it might
So I guess it's fine, just one more time
I guess it's fine, just one more time
I guess it's fine, just one more time
The Chapin Sisters' song "Hey" explores the ambivalent feelings that can arise when two people who are attracted to each other try to avoid complicating their relationship by only being friends. The song is a dialogue between the two people involved, with one person questioning how they can still pretend to be friends when the underlying attraction is so strong, and the other person offering the possibility of a physical connection while acknowledging that it may not be right. The chorus repeats the phrase "just one more time," suggesting that the two people can't resist giving in to their attraction, even if it's just for one night.
Throughout the song, the lyrics are imbued with a sense of longing and ambiguity. The line "You wanna come over?" can be read as a simple invitation, but also as a loaded question that implies something more. The phrase "your hair on my shoulder" is a sensual image that creates intimacy, but also implies a fleeting moment that can't be sustained. The song ends with the suggestion that the two people will see each other again, but the final line "you wanna come over?" leaves the outcome open-ended.
Overall, "Hey" is a reflection on the complexities of human connection, and the ways in which physical desire can complicate even the most straightforward relationships. By employing vivid imagery and an understated tone, The Chapin Sisters create a haunting and emotional portrait of two people struggling to navigate their attraction to each other.
