Weirdo
The Charlatans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

most of the time you are happy you're
a weirdo and before the introduction
ends there is someone feeling sorry
for themselves

look at your ugly shame what are you
talking for look at your ugly shame
most of the time you are demanding
what am I doing here and I don't want to
be and the hurt in which you bare you
could say goodbye to this earth

look at your ugly shame what are you
talking for look at your ugly shame
there's too much for me to know about

most of the time you are happy you're a
weirdo and your nerve is my device and
makes me sad

look at your ugly shame what are you

talking for look at your ugly shame
there's too much for me to know about

Overall Meaning

The opening line of The Charlatans' song "Weirdo" conveys a sense of paradoxical self-assuredness. The song presents the idea that the titular "weirdo" character is often happy in their own skin, in spite of society's norms and expectations. However, the following line "and before the introduction ends there is someone feeling sorry for themselves" suggests that not everyone shares this confidence in their non-conformity. The song seems to be exploring the idea that standing out and being different can be both a source of empowerment and a point of shame or vulnerability.

The chorus of the song repeats the line "look at your ugly shame, what are you talking for" which can be interpreted as an internal dialogue of self-doubt or as an external judgement from others. The phrase "ugly shame" suggests a deep-rooted sense of self-loathing or a perception of being unattractive or repulsive.

The second verse suggests that the "weirdo" character also experiences moments of feeling out of place and uncomfortable in social situations. The line "the hurt in which you bare you could say goodbye to this earth" hints at the desperation and hopelessness that can come from feeling like an outsider. The bridge of the song repeats the idea that there is "too much for me to know about" which could be interpreted as a recognition that one person's inner world and experience are complex and multifaceted.

I remember buying the CD just for this song. A fantastic song from a groundbreaking period of musical creativity -- the early 90's.

@EmanuelLFerreira

I have to agree 😎

There's a unique tension built into the rhythm of this song. Brilliant and well done.

The bass, the drums and the Hammond organ together in this are tremendous....one of my favourite 90's tracks. Also the lyrics in a lot of Charlatans songs feel like they shouldn't work rhythm wise but Tim Burgess is a genius and makes it work!

30 years old and still so fresh it hurts...and the video reminds me of so many bizarre 90s house parties...

@mcguckin13

"bizarre...house party"
That sums up my 90s perfectly
Disenfranchised teen at the start, bewildered father by the end.
Good Times!

The arrangements on this track are off the charts
