Life Is Sweet
The Chemical Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Days like this are sweet
I'm talking in my sleep
I think you're goin soft
I know its stiff for me
And Saturdays are short
I'm walkin with my dog
A lie's a canyon size
Break up home there's nothing bound and left
Longer that I love
Break up home there's nothing wrong with me
I'm driving in the sun
It's a hell of a way down south
Bring me back my love

And in your home
And Saturdays are short
I'm walking with my dog
A lie's a canyon size
Break up home there's nothing on the knife
And days like this are sweet
I'm walking in my sleep
It's a place where I belong
I banged a million drums
Someday I'll go back home
You'll it up and go

I like it in my head
And caught up in your love

Overall Meaning

The Chemical Brothers' song "Life Is Sweet," featuring guest vocals from Tim Burgess of The Charlatans, is a hypnotic and upbeat track with lyrics that are both nonsensical and enigmatic. At first glance, the song appears to be a celebration of leisurely, carefree days spent walking the dog and enjoying the sunshine, but upon closer examination, the lyrics reveal a somber undercurrent of nostalgia and longing for a lost love.

The opening stanza of the song sets the stage for this melancholic theme: "Days like this are sweet / I'm talking in my sleep / I think you're goin soft / I know its stiff for me." The singer appears to be reflecting on a past relationship that has soured, acknowledging that their former partner has moved on while they remain stuck in the past. The image of a "lie's a canyon size" suggests the depth and breadth of the deception that led to their breakup.

The second stanza takes a more hopeful turn, with the singer assertively declaring "Break up home there's nothing bound and left / Longer that I love / Break up home there's nothing wrong with me / I'm driving in the sun." Here, the singer appears to be asserting their independence and declaring that they are capable of moving on, even as they admit that they still long for their lost love. The repeated refrain of "And in your home / And Saturdays are short / I'm walking with my dog / A lie's a canyon size" suggests that the singer is haunted by memories of happier times spent with their partner, and that they are unable to let go of their past.

Overall, "Life Is Sweet" is a complex and layered song that mixes upbeat electronica with soul-searching lyrics. It's a song about the sweetness of life, even when things are bitter, and the nostalgia that we all carry for lost loves and happier times.

Sorry, but this is a MASTERPIECE on history of electronic music

@jesuscm1398

Why sorry? This is a fact

@KC9UDX

Truth. But the video is lackluster.

@stuartcarswell2815

I agree

@roberte.o.speedwagon3122

That's true because this is the begging of the breakbeat sound

@raisingirl95608

It's funny. I liked them back in the 90s but wasn't a "fan"
Then I saw them live at Coachella in the early 00's 😳🤯 They tore it apart. The laser show was crazy. Man, I want to go back to those years. Maybe we'll all get to take another taste on the other side.

@semisemicoloncolon

seriously though, these guys are amazing. I’ve only been a fan for a year and a bit but I wish I was alive and a fan back when they first started because everything these guys touch is literally incredible, and sometimes I feel (so deserted) like I’m the only one who loves and appreciates them this much but I’m happy when I’m reminded people to this day love them. i assume you also have seen their live shows, at least the ones available on YouTube? I have a playlist of my favorite ones on my channel, as well as just a playlist for these guys in general
