Letter To Myself
The Chi-Lites Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Write a letter, write another letter

Write a letter, write another letter

Write a letter

I'm sealing up this letter
I just finished signing your name

My friends would all be surprised

If they knew I was playing this game

I'll pretend it's a special delivery

And just to give me a hint

I'll use your favorite color

Smear it with your favorite scent

And I know you'd think that I'm crazy

But I can't lose what have I left

So I've decided to write this letter

And send it to myself

So to make my story short

In the mail box I will place

This letter that I wrote

And it's stamped with your lovely face

When I'm alone

And I need someone to talk to

I talk to your picture

Get me a pencil and paper

And write all the things

Say all the things

I've heard you say before

But with a little extra

Extra read all about it

Sugar and spice

I guess it makes me feel kind of nice

I write a letter to myself

Oh, write another letter to myself

I write another letter to myself

Oh, I write another letter to myself

What is a home when you're all alone

It seems so full, it seems so full but so empty

Oh, I put on the coat, leave you a note

And go to the places, places, places where we used to be

I pretend you are there, order dinner for two

Your very presence is all in the air

I write a letter to myself

Oh, write another letter to myself

I write another letter to myself

Oh, I write another letter to myself

I write another letter to myself

Write another letter to myself

I write another letter to myself

Oh, I write another letter to myself

I write another letter to myself

Write another letter to myself

Write another letter to myself

Write another letter to myself

Overall Meaning

The Chi-Lites’ song β€œA Letter to Myself” is a soulful ballad that reflects on loneliness and the struggles of moving on from a past relationship. The lyrics describe the singer's need for companionship, but instead of reaching out to friends or loved ones, they write letters to themselves. They sign their former partner's name and pretend it's a message from them. The lyrics suggest a person who is emotionally isolated and unable to form new relationships but finds joy in memories of the past with their partner. They reminisce about the past shared experiences and pretend they are in the presence of their estranged partner, talking to their picture and writing to themselves. The song highlights the importance of self-care and finding comfort in oneself during moments of emotional distress.

The song was written by Eugene Record, a Chicago-based songwriter, and producer, and was released in 1973. β€œA Letter to Myself” was a commercial success and reached Number 3 on the Billboard R&B charts. The song was a follow-up to the equally successful β€œOh Girl” released in 1972. The Chi-Lites are known for their soulful and gospel-inspired music often referred to as β€œsweet soul.” The lead singer, Eugene Record, was praised for his vocal talents and prolific songwriting skills.

I was in San Antonio in 1973, Larry, twelve-years old. If you don't mind, I'll take a piece of that memory. It's beautiful. I live in Oxford now, which I never saw coming. Live is quite a trip.

The time when men wrote beautiful poetry and created heavenly melodies to comfort πŸ’• β™₯️ hearts. The Chi-Lites did this better than most with the penmanship and musical arrangements of a guy called Eugene Record. I cannot get enough of their great music and harmonious voices.
