Everybody Knows
The Chicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me now if you came sneaking up behind
Would you know me and see behind the smile
I can change like colors on a wall
Hoping no one else will find what lies beneath it all
I think I hide it all so well

Stepping out, everyone can see my face
All the things I can't erase from my life
Everybody knows
Standing out so you won't forget my name
That's the way we play this game of life
Everybody knows

Looking through the crowd
I search for something else
But every time I turn around
I run into myself
Here I stand
Consumed with my surroundings
Just another day
Of everybody looking
I swore they'd never see me cry
You'll never see me cry

Stepping out, everyone can see my face
All the things I can't erase from my life
Everybody knows
Standing out so you won't forget my name
That's the way we play this game of life
Everybody knows

You say I'll pay the price
That's the chance that I'll take
Though you may think I'm telling lies
But I just call it getting by

Stepping out, everyone can see my face
All the things I can't erase from my life
Everybody knows

Standing out so you won't forget my name

That's the way we play this game of life
Everybody knows I am just barely getting by

Overall Meaning

The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, released their song "Everybody Knows" in 2006. The lyrics are about the struggle of being in the public eye and trying to maintain a certain image while hiding the real emotions underneath. The singer asks if someone would be able to see beyond her smile and recognize the pain she is trying to conceal. She mentions how she can change like colors on a wall, hoping no one else will find what lies behind the facade. She is constantly in the public eye, trying to stand out so people won't forget her name, but she feels like she is running into herself every time she turns around.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Everybody knows" to emphasize the fact that despite her efforts to hide her emotions, everyone is aware of her struggles. She acknowledges that she will have to pay the price for this fame but insists she is just getting by. The lines, "You'll never see me cry," suggest that she will continue to put on a brave face no matter what.

Overall, the lyrics are a commentary on the price of fame and the difficulties of being in the public eye. The singer is trying to find a balance between being famous and maintaining a sense of privacy and authenticity, which is a struggle many celebrities face.

I sang this song at an open mic in this huge barn when I was seven. I'll never forget the feeling of moving into the centre of the stage as the chorus began and the light reflecting off the glasses of people in the audience, or the smile on my dad's face at the back of the room. Things might have changed since then, but you've created such amazing memories with your songs. Thank you x
