Ragtime Cowboy Joe
The Chipmunks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out in Arizona where the bad men are,
And the only friend to guide you is an Evening Star,
The roughest, toughest man by far
Is Ragtime Cowboy Joe.
Got his name from singing to the cows and sheep
Every night they say he sings the herd to sleep
In a basso rich and deep,
Crooning soft and low

How he sings raggy music to his cattle
As he swings back and forward in his saddle
On his horse (a pretty good horse)
Who is syncopated gaited
And with such a funny meter
To the roar of his repeater

How they run when they hear the feller's gun
Because the western folks all know:
He's a hifalootin' scootin', shootin'
Son-of-a-gun from Arizona
Ragtime cowboy (talk about your cowboy)
Ragtime cowboy Joe.

Dressed up ev'ry Sunday in his Sunday clothes
He beats it for the village where he always goes,
And ev'ry girl in town is Joe's
'Cause he's a ragtime bear;
When he starts a-spieling on the dance hall floor,
No one but a lunatic would start a war

Wise men know his forty-four
Makes men dance for fair.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Chipmunks’s song, Ragtime Cowboy Joe, narrate the tale of a cowboy named Joe, a rugged and tough man who lives in Arizona. The song opens with the description of the land, a place where the bad men roam free and the only friend is an Evening Star. Amidst such circumstances exists Joe, the roughest and toughest man by far, who is known for his ragtime music. The moniker ‘Ragtime Cowboy Joe’ comes from his habit of singing to the cattle, and they respond to his basso-rich voice by falling asleep. The song continues with how he swings back and forwards on his horse, which is ‘syncopated gaited,’ as he sings raggy music to his cattle. His horse has a funny meter to the rhythm of the repeater, a word play describing his gun, which makes the cattle run with fear.

My dad had this on old 45rpm seven inch vinyl. When I was six years old it was the best song in the world, EVER!

OMG! I haven't heard this for about 50 years. Brings back so many memories of listening to Uncle Mac on the Light Programme.

This is a wonderful song. I lost the cassette tape with it on it. This, Alvin's Harmonica, and Alvin's Orchestra are my favorite songs by The Chipmunks.

Ah, I remember putting this on for my kids when they were young, imagine my horror when I heard my eldest singing sly wankers instead of side winders! I can laugh now, but it was really embarrassing when we had friends around. Still don't know where he heard that language, unless he heard his mother talking about me whilst I was at work! 🤔
