I Ain't No Miracle Worker
The Chocolate Watch Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don′t ask me to move a mountain
Don't ask me to swim your sea
Don′t think that I am a tower of strength
Don't lean too much on me

When looking to the future
Don't build your dreams too high
I beg you to remember
I′m just an ordinary guy

I ain′t no miracle worker
I do the best that I can
I ain't no miracle worker
Oh Lord, I ain′t no miracle man

And I don't have a fortune
You know I sweat for each dime I make
But I′m always living now just looking
To that get love you bring

Every day I keep on trying
To do my best for you
And every trying just ain't enough baby
Well tell me what would you have me do

I ain′t no miracle worker
I do the best that I can
I ain't no miracle worker
Oh Lord, I ain't no miracle man

Ask me to be tender
Ask me to be truth
Ask me for all the love I have
And girl, I′ll give it all to you

But girl, I just can′t offer
No storybook romance
Girl, that's what you′re looking for, baby
I tell you, we just don't have a chance

I ain′t no miracle worker
I do the best that I can

I ain't no miracle worker
Oh Lord, I′m not a miracle man

Overall Meaning

The Chocolate Watch Band's song I Ain't No Miracle Worker emphasizes that the singer is just an ordinary guy, and he isn't capable of solving all of his lover's problems or fulfilling her unrealistic expectations. The song's chorus "I Ain't No Miracle Worker" reinforces the idea that the singer is not a superhero who can make everything better instantly, and his lover should not place too much reliance on him.

In the first verse, the singer cautions his lover not to expect too much from him, and he admits that he isn't a tower of strength. He asks her not to build her dreams too high and to remember that he is just an ordinary person. In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that he is not wealthy and that he works hard for every dime he makes. He tries to do everything he can to make his lover happy, but it's never enough, and he asks her what more he can do.

Finally, in the third verse, the singer promises his lover that he will always be there for her, and he will give her all the love he has. However, he can't provide her with the storybook romance she is looking for, and he tells her that they don't have a chance. The song's overall message is that the singer is just an ordinary person who can only do so much, and his lover should not expect him to be a miracle worker.

In 1966, the Brogues version was covered by I Corvi, an garage rock band from Parma, Italy.
I Corvi nailed the Garage Rock sound (if you could overlook the Italian vocals).
Also worth a listen...
