Agnus Dei,
Qui tollis peccata mundi,
Miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei,
Qui tollis peccata mundi,
Miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei,

Qui tollis peccata mundi,
Dona nobis pacem.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Choir of New College Oxford's song Agnus Dei are a prayer to Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God. The phrase "Agnus Dei" translates to "Lamb of God" in Latin. The repetition of the line "Qui tollis peccata mundi" emphasizes the idea of Jesus taking away the sins of the world. The phrase "Miserere nobis" means "have mercy upon us" and is a plea for forgiveness and grace.

The third line, "Dona nobis pacem," means "grant us peace." This is a call for an end to strife and conflict, both internal and external. The song is a powerful expression of faith and a plea for redemption and resolution of conflict.

The use of Latin in the song is significant, both for its religious and historical connotations. Latin has been the language of the Catholic Church for centuries, and its use in this song reinforces the idea of a timeless, unchanging faith. Furthermore, the use of the language connects the song to centuries of liturgical tradition and lends a sense of solemnity and reverence to the piece.

i love both Barber's adagio for strings and agnus dei, but when it comes down to it, the choir version is significantly more emotional than the strings, but i still love them both
