Never On Sunday
The Chordettes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, you can kiss me on a Monday
A Monday, a Monday is very, very good
Or you can kiss me on a Tuesday
A Tuesday, a Tuesday, in fact I wish you would
Or you can kiss me on a Wednesday
A Thursday, a Friday and Saturday is best
But never, never on a Sunday
A Sunday, a Sunday, 'cause that's my day of rest

Most any day you can be my guest
Any day you say, but my day of rest
Just name the day that you like the best
Only stay away on my day of rest

Oh, you can kiss me on a cool day, a hot day
A wet day, which everyone you choose
Or try to kiss me on a gray day, a May day
A pay day, and see if I refuse
And if you make it on a bleak day
A freak day, a week day, why you can be my guest
But never, never on a Sunday

Overall Meaning

The Chordettes' song "Never on Sunday" is a whimsical, upbeat tune about the importance of taking a day of rest. The song begins with the lyrics "Oh, you can kiss me on a Monday, A Monday, a Monday is very, very good" and goes on to suggest that the singer would be happy to receive a kiss on any day of the week, except for Sunday, which is her day of rest. The song is a plea for respect for the singer's need for rest and relaxation, with a playful tone that suggests that the singer is not taking herself too seriously.

The lyrics of "Never on Sunday" are notable for their light-hearted, almost comical tone. The song appears to be a playful take on the traditional notion of the day of rest, with the singer suggesting that she is happy to accept a kiss on any day of the week, except for Sunday. The chorus of the song, "But never, never on a Sunday, A Sunday, a Sunday, 'Cause that's my day of rest," is a catchy hook that underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

One of the interesting facts about "Never on Sunday" is that it was originally a Greek song, written by Manos Hadjidakis for the 1960 film of the same name. The song was translated into English and became a hit for The Chordettes in 1961. Another interesting fact is that the song was covered by a number of other artists, including Connie Francis, Julie London, and Lena Horne. In addition, the song was featured in a number of films and television shows, including the 1966 comedy film "The Fortune Cookie" and the 1986 film "Crocodile Dundee."

This melody actually used to be a Greek classic. My uncle’s friend gave me a fake small mpouzouki (something like a guitar) and it had a trigger that you pulled backwards and it played this melody on a music box inside. I’m now crying because I got that when I was about 3 or 4 years old. Now it is broken but it still works. Also I am crying because my uncle is in the hospital because he crashed on his bicycle and almost died.
