The eponymous 1968 album by Israel's Churchills is one of the most sought-after records in the world. While some rare records go for hundreds of dollars, an original copy of The Churchills is likely to fetch thousands. Why? Because not only is it next to impossible to find, but The Churchills is one of those rarer-than-rare records that actually lives up to its reputation. From the opening bars of the first song on Side One, "Open Your Eyes" - an explosion of ecstatic screams and fuzz, "faces, lips and teeth and eyes; diamond rings and pretty things, and arms and legs and thighs" - you know this is going to be one amazing trip.
Track after track the album continues to astonish, delivering everything from electrifying psychedelic rock to evocative pop ballads with equal degrees of skill and originality. Soulfully delivered vocals, searing fuzz guitars, spacey sound effects, exotic Eastern flourishes - the Churchills use a dazzling palate of tones and colours, stretching the primitive Tel Aviv studio technology of the day to its limits to create one of the most brilliant psychedelic albums from anywhere in the world, let alone Israel. Although there's elements of the Yardbirds, Cream, Hendrix the Doors, and the Jefferson Airplane (especially the studio trickery of After Bathing At Baxter's), the sound of the Churchills is very much their own personal vision - a distinct blend of East and West that is unmistakably from their own corner of the world. ~ugly things #19
HEADSTRONG
The Churchills Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Break and bend till I lose to you
Drawing conclusions color in what you miss
You paint this picture of me just two eyes and a kiss
Now you can't take back everything you said
I won't change my mind till you lose your headstrong ways
But I'm not there anymore pulling petals in a daze
Now you can't take back everything you said
I won't change my mind till you lose your headstrong ways
Now you can't take back everything you said
I won't change my mind till you lose your headstrong ways
Listen to your voice of reason drown me in your storm
I'm calm under the waves I'm strong
Now you can't take back everything you said
I won't change my mind till you lose your headstrong ways
The lyrics of The Churchills's song "Headstrong" talk about a relationship where one person has a strong and dominant personality, while the other person is more submissive and tries to adapt to the other's point of view. The first verse describes how the dominant person tries to change the other's perspective and make them see things their way. The second verse highlights how the singer is now aware of the manipulation and will not be swayed by empty promises and apologies. The chorus reinforces this idea, with the singer stating they will not change their mind until the other person changes their behavior.
The bridge talks about the conflicting emotions involved in this relationship. The singer is drowning in their partner's "storm," but they are still in control and remain calm even in difficult situations. This line could also be interpreted as the singer realizing their own strength and resilience despite their partner's attempts to control them.
Overall, "Headstrong" is a song about standing up for oneself and refusing to be controlled by others. It encourages listeners to be confident in their own beliefs and not to let others manipulate or deceive them.
