Australian 4 piece TheCityShakeUp have built their reputation with punk around the edges renegade rock. Born from the bowels of 90’s punk and rock – TCSU write their music collectively drawing on the combined influences and ideals of all four members in the band. This united front is heavily represented on their latest EP “Trigger Happy Slander” – a social commentary on the less chivalrous - Addressing futile hostility, first world problems and everyone’s old friend heart-ache.
With a sound that’s been forged on the road, TCSU bare it all on stage and leave nothing behind. Whether the show is for a crowd of a thousand or simply for a select few the lads make it their mission to ensure everyone leaves as sweaty and thunderstruck as they are. Winning over the crowd at Australias longest running national music festival – The Big Day Out in 2011, Opening for Canada’s finest Billy Talent in 2012 amongst an onslaught of international and local supports (not to mention their own headlining tours). The TCSU lads are no strangers to the stage and life on the road.
The traditional DIY punk ethos is one that is not lost on these lads. TCSU are self managed, self funded, self promoted, hell they even design and print their own shirts. It only takes one look at their completely self shot film clips or a quick listen to any of the releases recorded in their self made studio (they even constructed their own vocal booth) to realize these self sufficient beasts are no chumps.
Pouring every ounce of energy they have into their music and with 2013 set to be their biggest year yet, The City Shakeup show no signs of slowing down as they herald in a new breed of DIY rock renegades.

Hello, tell me how have you been, my friend
The rains remain although the seasons changed
I know that this is not who you are
How long, till you've gone, gone too far
What did I say?
This fire started from the spark
Now---
What did I say?
That---before
These good intentions fall apart
Now---
Alone, I -- see you
This fate remains, say it was all in vain
I know, that this is not who you are
So long, my friend you've gone too far
What did I say?
What did you take me for?
This fire started from the spark
Now---no one's left
What did I say?
That---before
These good intentions fall apart
----
Well let's go
What did I say?
What did you take me for?
This fire started from the spark
Now---
What did I say?
That---before
These good intentions fall apart
----
The lyrics of The City Shakeup's song "What Did I Say" are about two friends who have grown apart due to a change in one of their behaviors. The singer asks their friend how they have been and acknowledges that the relationship has been affected by the changes they have seen. The singer expresses their concern and tries to urge their friend to get back on the right path before it's too late. The chorus repeats the questions "What did I say?" and "What did you take me for?" which implies that the singer's words of warning were not taken seriously.
The verses create a sense of tension and apprehension as the singer watches their friend's behavior worsen. They know that this is not who their friend truly is but they fear that they have already gone too far down a path of self-destruction. The chorus is a plea for their friend to listen to the singer's good intentions and avoid further damage. The final line, "Well let's go", feels like a final call to action or a sign that the singer is ready to walk away if their friend doesn't listen.
Overall, the song is a cautionary tale about the importance of heeding the warnings of those who care about us and avoiding destructive behavior before it's too late.
