A girl that he loved that he gave away
She said go boy go, will this make you stay
He said thanks a lot, he said not today
She tried so hard she tried so long
That she lost her sense of right and wrong
He said he heard a word coming from above
He said the closest thing to death is love
Hold on, no, don't let go
I want to hold you tonight and never let you go
Hold on, no, don't let go
I want to hold you tonight and never let you go
When you wait too long and you find out that what you had was free
And the tears you fought were telling you
Just what you really need
He had to sing a song so he left that land
He never said goodbye he never held her hand
He was home in a year a broken man
Couldn't find the girl who would love him again
Now the only girls that will hold him again
Are his mother and his sister Ann
And he drives around in the Chevrolet
And he sits in the back and he cries everyday
In the car that he let the girl get away
Hold on, no, don't let go
I want to hold you for life and never let you go
Hold on, no, don't let go
I want to hold you for life and never let you
Let you
Let you
Let you
Go
The song “Let You Go” by The Clarks tells a poignant story of a man who let go of the woman he loved and the consequences of his decision. The song opens with him reminiscing about meeting her on the beach while he was driving his Chevrolet. However, he gave her away and although she asked him to stay, he refused. She tried to hold on, but eventually lost touch with what was right and wrong. The man believes that love is the closest thing to death, perhaps indicating that he was afraid of committing to her or becoming too dependent on her.
The chorus repeats the message of the song, with the man regretting his decision and wanting to hold her forever. He realizes too late that what he had with her was free and that he was foolish to let her go. He left her without saying goodbye and when he returned, he was a broken man who could not find love again. The only people who hold him now are his mother and sister, and he spends his time driving around crying in the Chevrolet that he gave the girl away in. The song is a heartbreaking reminder of the pain that comes with regret and missed opportunities.
Overall, the song “Let You Go” is a powerful and melancholy song that explores the themes of regret, loss, and the impermanence of love.
