Know Your Rights
The Clash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is a public service announcement
With guitar
Know your rights
All three of them

Number one
You have the right not to be killed
Murder is a crime
Unless it was done
By a policeman
Or an aristocrat
Oh, know your rights

And number two
You have the right to food money
Providing of course
You don't mind a little
Investigation, humiliation
And if you cross your fingers
Rehabilitation

Know your rights
These are your rights
Hey, say, Wang

Oh, know these rights

Number three
You have the right to free speech
As long as
You're not dumb enough to actually try it

Know your rights
These are your rights
Oh, know your rights
These are your rights
All three of 'em
Ha!
It has been suggested in some quarters
That this is not enough
Well

Get off the streets

Run
Get off the streets

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Clash's song "Know Your Rights" are a satirical commentary on government propaganda and the limitations of individual freedoms. The opening lines, "This is a public service announcement with guitar, know your rights, all three of them," highlight the irony in the song's title. Rather than promoting individual rights and freedoms, the song suggests that there are only three fundamental rights that people have, and even those are severely restricted.

The first right is the right not to be killed, which is presented as a crime unless it is done by a policeman or an aristocrat. This highlights the inherent bias in the legal system and the ways in which certain people are granted more power and privilege than others. The second right is the right to food money, but this right comes with conditions such as investigation, humiliation, and rehabilitation. This suggests that the government controls the distribution of resources and uses it as a tool of control over individual freedoms.

The third and final right is the right to free speech, but this right is only afforded to those who are not "dumb enough to actually try it." This implies that there are limitations to free speech, and those who speak out against the government or other powerful institutions may face consequences. Overall, the song is a critique of the limitations of individual freedoms and the ways in which people are controlled by those in power.

This song never goes stale, grows old. Its like a fine wine of brutal honesty.

This band were my activist parents! Lol. They were, I was obsessed with their music and their message from age 18 years to the present day. They liberated my mind, my attitude towards how things should work… and for that I’m eternally grateful. They believed in justice and peace. Love ya Mr. Strummer and all the band, wish we had more of your ilk today X

@petarst

The same for me, the most important band ever !

@_naco1070

I'm so glad I discovered bands like The Clash or the Dead Kennedys when I was 15, it blew my mind how much sense they were making

@paulhorvath5773

I saw them oct 5 1979 in houston. My sister and a few friends were the first punks in our south Texas town. The other kids thought we were from another planet. But the old ranchers and cowboys were very cool to us when we would play pool in the little ice house/country store. Pool was 10 cents a game, beers were 50 cents, playing 8 ball with a 75 year old cowboy from the nine bar ranch and getting faced, while listening to the Clash....priceless. Kids today will never do anything that cool in thier lives. Hell yea I miss Joe. Always thought I would get to sit down and drink a redstripe and smoke a spliff with him...Joe put the coffee on buddy, we will all be coming home soon.

@dylanthewolfo9243

I miss Joe Strummer, he is one of the best songwriters and his messages still hold true to this day, The Clash honestly did change my life and this is one of their best songs for sure.

Dick Lucas - SUB HUM ANS.
A far superior lyricist.

@tonyjones1560

I’d love to hear a dialogue between Joe Strummer, George Carlin and Malcolm X right now…it’d be nuclear fire!
