Superman
The Clique Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am I am I am Superman and I know what's happening
I am I am I am Superman and I can do anything

You don't really love that guy you make it with now do you?
I know you don't love that guy cause I can see right through you

I am I am I am Superman and I know what's happening
I am I am I am Superman and I can do anything

If you go a million miles away I'll track you down girl
Trust me when I say I know the pathway to your heart

If you go a million miles away I'll track you down girl
Trust me when I say I know the pathway to your heart

I am I am Superman and I know what's happening
I am I am I am Superman and I can do anything

I am I am I am Superman and I know what's happening
I am I am I am Superman and I can do anything

Overall Meaning

The Clique's song "Superman" is about a man who believes he is invincible and can do anything, including winning the love of a woman whom he believes is in a relationship with someone else. The repeated refrain "I am Superman" emphasizes the singer's sense of power and control.

The second verse addresses the woman directly, suggesting that he can see through her facade and knows that she doesn't truly love the man she is with. The line "I can do anything" is repeated again, suggesting that he believes he can manipulate the situation to his advantage.

The chorus repeats with the singer insisting that, no matter how far away the woman goes, he will find her and win her heart. The repetition of "I am Superman" creates a sense of relentlessness and determination.

Overall, the song can be seen as a commentary on toxic masculinity and the danger of narcissism. The singer's sense of entitlement and invincibility is both unsettling and troubling, and the lyrics provide a warning to listeners to be wary of those who seek to exercise control over others.

I love the way "I am, I am Superman, and I know what's happening" is repeated almost continuously throughout, especially as a counterpoint to the verses.

@grimson

The way the harmonizing comes in on 'happening' and 'anything' in the first lines is glorious.

Correct sickly sweet type thing. Track is kinda inimitable

A little "elephant walk" too.@@flannigan7956

REMs version is about 20-25% up tempo. I love this simple bass line. This is a gorgeous tune! Thank REM for finding this in 1986 and making it their own.

@atomeyes99

REM's version had drums and was a bit poppier. the lack of a consistent drumline in this song is pretty odd.

@garagegeekguy

What a groovy bass line. REM stayed very faithful to the original on their cover.

@galoon

Definitely--Gary Zekley didn't write a bad song!

@JohnHWelch63

It is a great bass line. In most songs you can barely hear the bass guitar. I love it when it pops right out there like this song.

@JohnHWelch63

@galoon He didn't record and rele7ease bad songs, but as a songwriter myself, I guarantee he has written some turds he's never used. We all do. Even the greatest songwriters in history can't come up with gems all the time.
