One was a nomadic group of people who crossed the Bering Straight to be one of the first people to come to the North American continent. They hunted wooly mammoth with detachable spears and lived in what would become Clovis, New Mexico, from where they inherited their name.

The other is a four piece band: Dan, Peter, Jay and Eliav

Not a bad assessment, overall. However, the material quality does have a reasonable explanation. If these were proto - Clovis, they may have been recent immigrants at this juncture, therefore unaware of locations for better working material. Sometimes, even today, we "make do" with inferior products when better items are hard to locate.

I do agree that this find should be examined with great scrutiny, and knowing how this branch of science can be hotly debated, I am satisfied that will happen. More than once.

However, overall, there are more sites than just this one that also seem to predate the Clovis Culture, and the overland rout was always tenuous at best, considering a coastal migration, even in simple raft boats, was an easier route from Siberia. And it could have even included some of both methods.

With enough searching, answers may be found to clarify the picture. But it is almost unthinkable that humans spread to every livable spot on Earth in a geological blink of the eye, yet never found the Americas till 13.5K years ago.

Footprints were recently found in New Mexico that are dated to 21,000 to 23,000 years ago. Clovis definitely was not first, and by at least 10,000 years. There will no doubt be more findings pushing the dates farther back.

I've always favored the 30k/40k year horizon with many coastal water crossings. The simplest boats were basically mammoth or buffalo hides stretched over a bent sapling frame, originally as a shelter, then during a serious storm, a boat.

The high altitude population at 4:20 is very interesting. It's been shown that the modern human population of Tibet did not themselves evolve the adaptations they possess for high altitude tolerance and are thought to have acquired these from interbreeding with the much older Denisovan or some similar group which had slowly gained those traits over tens of thousands of years. This last part has always intrigued me since the similarly high altitude adapted population of the Andes in South America have entirely different adaptations from those of Tibet and would've had even less time to evolve theirs after reaching South America. Meaning this strongly supports the idea a seperate subgroup of early humans were entirely adapted to life in the high Andes even before modern humans crossed Berrengia 30,000 years ago.

I live near the meadowcroft rock shelter and village in Pennsylvania. It's a common place that schools take kids for field trips. The rock shelter goes back about 19 to 20,000 years and the village is about 150 years old. It's a pretty interesting place.

It will be interesting see what the future holds for the arrival of Pacific groups, who landed along the west coast of SA, and some places in NA. My guess is that seafaring people had just as easy a time populationg the Pacific AND parts of SA, also Pre-Clovis. Oceanic currents highly favored this occurring.

I found/have a rock/tool shaped exactly like the one in this video. I found it hiking in Southern California. I new it had to be a tool as it fitted perfectly in my hand and the edge was razor sharp. Perfect for skinning a deer.

RenaissanceRecorders Water of Life No scientific theory is absolute [only superstitions and religions deal in that--pardon the repetition]. Like finding evidence of pre-Clovis people, when sufficient evidence is found the previous understanding will be modified or overturned; this is now happening, pushing human occupation back by thousands of years. There are competing extinction theories, many make sense, some not so much, and none has absolute proof. It is not yet justified by satisfactory criteria to render a hard and fast judgement.

I don't believe so, his most recent video was saying how he thought that Polynesians traveled to South America and how he found it laughable that mainstream anthropology says that they wouldn't have been able to, yet they believe monkeys were able to make the voyage on driftwood.

I think he isn't afraid to challenge current paradigms though and definitely introduces evidence which mainstream anthropology might consider taboo for political reasons.

Good stuff. I just read the same material and this just reinforces earlier material of fines dating that far back and possibly further. Much more under water exploration is required to get to the really good stuff. Unfortunately, 100 metres of water is at this time a very formidable barrier. We know little, and the more that is found, the more we realise the less we real know. That is in all fields of science.

There is a program on PBS in California titled, "California's Gold." It is an interview program where the host goes throughout California to point out interesting places to visit and talk to people who live and work at those places. At one time the host went to Calico the ghost town. He was interviewing one of the archaeologists there and she said that they have evidence that humans were there not just 30,000 years ago but 100,000 years ago. The evidence comes from certain rocks, the kind used for pulverizing such as a mortar and pestle. This is not well-known.

There is a lot of evidence that's been around for years that disproves the current theories on when humans first inhabited the America's. I live near by the site in Chile where they found the foot print, worst part is that there's is a neighborhood covering half the site. There are also 2 other sites close by and both are human settlements dating back to around 14,000 years ago. Unfortunately they haven't found any human bones, but the construction was fairly advanced and very well preserved!

I think it actually would have been much easier to take the Atlantic route. It's not as if the people coming Asia were carrying all their belongings in carts. The wheel hadn't been invented yet. So coming by way of the pack ice through the Atlantic would have made the trip much easier by using sleds and small boats.

Concerning these discoveries, even though I have sometimes differed with conventional arkie skeptics Davis and Meltzer, I think further scrutiny & evidence would be appropriate before concluding whether the Chiquihuite cave finds are human artifacts, or "geofacts."

Elsewhere, the green limestone might have been desirable for crafting ceremonial props, but it was a poor raw material for manufacturing reliable lithic tools.

If a Pleistocene culture was advanced enough to migrate from another continent, we really should expect that they would have developed more advanced lithic technology, and the ability to craft tools from harder minerals.

Glacial till Zone generally have disrupted timeline. Just finding tools doesn't do any good if you don't know when it was made. Also, and get natural fractured Stone in glacial till Zone, just like rock falls in cave. The only way you can distinguish incidental fractured rocks is by cluster location. And you won't get that in a till Zone

Despite i believe that there were other civilizations living in what we call Americas, the problem with carbon dating and TSL/OSL is that the techniques are flawed. The fact that Beringia and even Zealandia subcontinents were above sea level proves huge increase in sea water (thus Marine Reservoir Effect MRE could have alter the dates greatly).

They don't have to use carbon dating, there are many different dating methods that they can compare for accuracy

I realize that we identify Clovis people by their technology, but wouldn’t they have needed to figure that out at some point? Shouldn’t there be both pre-tech Clovis and post-tech Clovis? Would they be identified as different exclusively based on lack of Clovis points? They’d be the same “people” genealogically yet different technologically. Is there any/enough genetic data available to say if this is the case, or not, from site to site?

i mean the bering bridge appear also aprox 40.000 years ago lasting 4,000 years before the 25.000 through 11.000-10.500 bp period, and Human habitation of the Australian continent is known to have begun at least 65,000 years ago so they/we where already in asia so it should be a high debate if we cross before clovis since way back and there were preclovis stuff all around the continent like what u say, in brasil, mex, etc but cool that it was found such great evidences about it and published in nature. great vid and insight

I wonder if by summarizing all the oldest human finds we could see some pattern predicting the reasons why we are unable to find even older evidence of human presence in Americas as yet? The thing is that we know that these people used to live mostly on the coast - and the sea levels went up during the Younger Dryas by 400ft. Obviously, all such places, let's say 95% of such possible places are now under water. The second place where they could be living is on some plains, say river junctions. But these are all remodeled in the last 30000 years for sure. The places like caves didn't give much evidence unlike Europe, so where are the most places to look for it? We cannot deny their possibility of existence if we are not willing to prospect for exactly such places under 30-60 feet of mud, right?

The elevation of this occupied cave amazes me. My guess is that humans needed defensible space to afford protection of the group against predation by American Lions, Cave Bears, Sabre Tooth Cats, etc. Just because we're apex predators now, well, how do you fight a cave bear?

To leave the fertile crescent with a minimal head count and travel the world to populate the Americas always seemed strange to me in the manner of logistics. Navigation, food, child bearing and rearing, climate differentials, tools, disease, wounds and death, wild animals etc.,etc.
Mind boggleing terrain, impasses, back-tracking, in-fighting, provision storage and transport...I can’t wrap my head around it !!!

I would suggest that while it may be true that humans hunted the last of the large fauna to extinction, it was only possible because the population of these animals had been decimated by the YD impactor. When researchers say 'hunting large fauna to extinction' they typically mean humans were the sole cause of such extinctions, a hypothesis which has little evidence to support it.

Humans being there for a long time, make this hypothesis even less likely. It gives animals extra time to adapt to hunting humans and also begs the question why did humans in Africa and Eurasia didn't hunt large animals to extinction ?

Matt, good video as usual. I have said it before, Aboriginal peoples were wandering the Americas atleast 30,000 years ago and there were still Aboriginals in Tierra del Fuego, South America in the early twentieth century. Killed off eventually by the local populous, as they were seen as imposters in the area although they had been there for millennia before the indigenous populous wandered in.

The ANE connection to both Native Americans and Europeans does appear in many analyses, but it is complicated and different papers have different opinions.

It is common to hear that the ANE contributed ~1/3 of Native American Paleoindian genetics. But this depends a single find, the Mal'ta boy. More finds might change the conclusions!

I urge everyone who watched this video to look into some of the criticisms and critiques of this research. Although there is too much to summarize in a youtube comment, IMO the evidence for the ~33ka occupation is quite dubius. One of the key points of criticism is that, while convincing artifacts were recovered from the site, those few recovered from the early dated components were arguably produced and/or deposited by natural geological mechanisms. In the words of Archaeologist Loren Davis, "humans don't have a monopoly on the physics required to break rocks".

Humans were in the Americas long before even this find. There is a site in Brazil along the Atlantic coast that was dated at 250,000ya, which was immediately dismissed by academic funded so-called scientists, and they proceeded to run the finder out of the profession for daring to challenge the prevailing orthodoxy.

@Ben Gilkes Its been a few years ago, late '90s maybe, and I've forgotten the details, but it was a female archaeologist; site was cliff caves along coast of Brazil; very early dating; funded academics sliced her to shreds, and that's the last I heard of it.

Just for sake of discussion; some archaelogists are not accepting the cave findings as conclusive. The 1900 stone "tools" from the cave aren't necessarily crafted, but may be results of rocks chipping naturally - as there has been no evidence of fire pits, human DNA, animal bones that were cut or had other evidence of "kills" by humans. We all clearly love science, so it is important to weigh evidence critically and carefully before we shift the paradigm.

How is it surprising to find out that their were humans in America a long time ago?

The whole of the last Ice age lasted for many tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of years. And all through that time the extent of the ice coverage waxed and waned depending on the global temps at the time. At the same time many waves of hominids in all of it's forms came up out of Africa and spread across the globe. The phrase "coming out" of Africa is misleading. As the ice was waxing and waning ocean levels were rising and falling and sometimes pretty dramatically. At times it might have been possible to walk from Africa to Indonesia to Australia to Antarctica to South America and go north to Florida. The land surfaces would of been double or triple what they are today at times. And these "times" would of lasted for hundreds or perhaps thousands of years. So it is possible that some small groups or individuals had made it to the Americas earlier than 30,000 years. so what i'm saying is that at the various times when the human populations grew to leave a noticeable impact that they didn't need to cross any land bridge because they were already here. However, just like with the environment they were very susceptible to environment change with the ice age. So populations would wax and wane too. And new peoples were arriving all the time and were at the mercy of the environment as well. Not all of these people left an impact on today's land surfaces. Where they lived could of been where ocean or lake is today. So we would never know if they were here or when.

agree. there could have been dozens or even thousands of times when a hominid crossed to North America, or back to Asia, without leaving any evidence today. A big deal is made of the opening of the "Ice free corridor" but in fact it was only closed for a limited time, mostly it was open, if we look back on the scale of 100s of thousands of years.

Wasn't the habitable earth one large continent, Pangaea? Of course humans would be everywhere. As shared technology and common structures are in every corner of the globe. It is only after the breaking up of the continents that things changed.
(Don't tear me apart I'm only a "lay person" without an extensive archaeological education.)

@Pam The Earth and continents have moved an awful lot, there is evidence of once walk-able landmasses linking certain continents together. Though geologists have measured the movement of the continents and their age, confirming that Pangaea was much to long ago, you are right in that there has been land linking continents to each other that early humanity could have used to spread around the globe.

I find this rather weak broth. When I was doing my PhD on the Egyptian Neolithic in the '70s, Meadowcroft and its C14 suite were already published and well known. (A colleague of mine worked with Adovasio there.) That there are now a few other sites of that age is neither dramatic nor unexpected. It seems likely that a thin human population crossed from Asia to the Americas long before the Clovis expansion. But apart from C14 and (as alleged) Thermoluminescence dates, this video tells us nothing much more. There two photos of stone tools. If they are both of the same tool, it is an un-reworked flake struck from a simple platform. I'm happy to accept that as evidence of human tool production, but if that's all they got along with their C14 and TL dates, we really don't know anything about these early migrants. Surely the archeology has produced more than that! Would have loved to have known!
