The Shadow Knows
The Coaster Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You can hide down in the alley
With your hat pulled over your eye
You can wear a wig or moustache
Or any old disguise
Well, you can change your name and your address
Even change your style of clothes
But the Shadow knows
The Shadow knows

Now, you thought you had me baffled (the shadow knows)
You thought I didn't know, hee-hee (the shadow knows)
But I know where you goin', baby (the shadow knows)
Long before you go
You can't even snap your fingers
Hee, or wiggle you toes, without the-
Shadow knows
The Shadow knows

The Shadow knows, the Shadow knows
The Shadow knows, the Shadow knows
Ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-the Shadow knows
The Shadow knows

I say, "Baby, stop your jiving
And your messing round"
'Cause I know what you're putting, baby, long before you put it down
You better mind your Ps and Qs
And your Ms and Ns and Os

Because the Shadow knows
The Shadow knows (the Shadow knows)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Shadow Knows by The Coasters describe the idea of being watched and known by something that is unseen, referred to as the Shadow. The song talks about how one can try to change their identity and go unrecognized but the Shadow is always watching and knows everything. The lyrics are playful with words and use phrases like "snap your fingers" and "wiggle your toes" to imply that even the smallest of movements cannot be hidden from the Shadow.

The use of the Shadow metaphorically represents the sense of awareness and intuition that one gains through experience. The Shadow can be interpreted as a conscience that tells one that something is going wrong, making the person second-guess their actions. However, the Shadow is not explicitly described as a good or bad entity, leaving it open to interpretation.

Overall, The Shadow Knows is a fun and catchy song that uses clever lyrics and a metaphorical representation of awareness to create an enjoyable tune.

Back in the 1980s CING Radio had an all-night DJ that never spoke on the air who called himself The Shadow. This was his theme song. Back then it was almost impossible to hear good oldies on the radio. Now, of course, I have Youtube.
