Their collaboration with legendary songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller gave them a unique sound that was very humorous most of the time. Their first huge hit came with "Young Blood" and "Searchin'." They also had success with hits such as "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," and "Little Egypt."
Gardner was still touring with The Coasters as late as 2005, although he is the only surviving original member. Gardner is now semi-retired and has handed the reins over to his son Carl Jr.
In 1987, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, thus becoming the first group to be inducted (the other inductees at the time were solo acts). In 2000, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame. In 2004, "Young Blood" was #414 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs Of All Time. "Young Blood" and "Yakety Yak" were part of The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll. The band's song "Down In Mexico" appears on the new film, Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof.

Point of Northern history here. This was discovered in 1974 ish by the late Nick Washer, a soul man responsible for supplying many legendary tunes to the scene. The first play at a northern soul club was in fact down South at the legendary (for some) Shades of Green club in Camberley Surrey. That was on a Friday night, on the Saturday Nick gave it to Dave Burton, who I believe invented the Freddie Jones cover-up name, he took it to the Mecca and the rest is history.

Many thanks to Tony Ellis for the history on this. However it was not given to me by the late Nick Washer. It was in a wooden chest of records I bought from a Jamaican guy who used to frequent my shop in Berwick Street market. I believe he had a friend who worked for Decca records. The chest contained the Coasters and also 2 copies of Dena Barnes and Nolan Chance on Bunky which I sold to Ady Croasdell. I payed the Coaters over the phone to Ian Levine who had never heard of it. The rest of the story from Tony is correct I took it to the Shades and then to Blackpool after I covered it up as My Hearts Wide Open by Freddie Jones. Not to disrespect Nick Washer as he provided me with many a top sound including Otis Smith and many more. RIP Nick. xxx
