Young Blood
The Coasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw her standin' on the corner
A yellow ribbon in her hair
I couldn't keep myself from shoutin'
Look a-there! Look a-there
Look a-there! Look a-there

Young blood, young blood (?), young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

I took one look and I was fractured
I tried to walk but I was lame
I tried to talk but I just stuttered
What's your name? What's your name?
What's your name? What's your name?

Young blood (oh), young blood, young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

What crazy stuff
She looked so tough
I had to follow her all the way home
Then things went bad, I met her dad
He said, "You'd better leave my daughter alone"

Well, I couldn't sleep a wink for tryin'
I saw the rising of the sun
And all night my heart was cryin'
You're the one, you're the one
You're the one, you're the one

Young blood (oh-oh-oh), young blood, young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

Young blood (oh-oh-oh), young blood, young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

Overall Meaning

The Coasters’ “Young Blood” is a classic rock and roll song about a boy who falls hopelessly in love with a tough-looking girl he sees on the street. The song is a tale of unrequited love and the resulting heartache. The opening verse sets the scene, the boy sees the girl, and he cannot help but stare. The “yellow ribbon” in her hair catches his eye, and he shouts out in excitement. He cannot get her out of his mind. The boy feels like he is “fractured” and “lame” in front of her; he cannot even speak properly, asking her name repeatedly.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase “young blood” over and over, emphasizing the young age of the characters involved. The boy seems to be in awe of the girl’s toughness and her disregard for what others think of her. He feels a strong connection to her despite her indifference to him. In the final verse, the boy visits the girl’s home to try to see her again, but the girl’s father confronts him and tells him to leave his daughter alone. Despite the father’s warning, the boy cannot get the girl out of his head and spends the entire night pining for her.

Overall, the song reflects the innocent romantic notions of youth and the heartbreak that often results when those feelings are not reciprocated.

My father actually toured with the coasters he played bass for them and I had a chance to meet the original coasters, very nice bunch of musicians, they started doing the vegas circuit and at the end there was only one of the original coasters left but they were still getting booked, I loved their 🎵 music. Great guys really original rock stars

You're father may be in a photo i have buried in a cedar chest back home in Tennessee. They were the opening act when Cool Springs Galeria Mall near Nashville opened to the public in the 1990s. When the "oldies station" then (Oldies 96.3) announced them playing their opening day, I couldn't resist. I loved all their old songs.

This song still grooves, even after all these years this music still jams!

This song has occupied, from time to time, a good space in my mind. Sometimes I sing it to myself and it humors me. The Coasters are sometimes discounted as a novelty group but this record sports a great sense of finesse and humor which overshadows today's coarse and vulgar attempts at levity. The Coasters had a string of hits in the 50's and their legacy continues unabated.

I heard this on the radio last night - hadn't heard it in years.  For all you youngsters out there...the Coasters - as good as it gets.
