FEVER
The Collection Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was singing by the river,
waiting for my troubles to be gone
and you were coming through the speakers,
sliding down my ears and played their drums
and I was sick with holy fever,
burning up with blankets and with love
and you would love me like a mother,
cooling me with freezing baptisms

It seems that I had struggled O' so long
to say your name without some fear
of finding out your name was nothing
more than just a name to make things clear
but then you give your hands to me
and I have seen your side and touched the holes
the holes that spell forgiveness
in fewer letters than I could ever be told

but if I am a sinner, then I have got Paul in my sights
'cause we have both been living with unspoken thorns in our sights
but then you take those thorns out and wear them all as a crown
things had changed the moment you came down

call to me, you call to me,
in disbelief i fall flat on my face
the countless times that you've caught me
is never as surprising as the chase
so bind my heart in dirty rags
and tie it to the place you call your home

and I will walk forever with you,
you will be the only place I roam

Overall Meaning

The song “Fever” by The Collection is a beautiful ballad about finding redemption through love. The singer is expressing his love for someone he deems holy, who seems to be a savior of sorts for him. The opening verses portray a period of pain and sickness, with the singer waiting by the river, hoping for his troubles to go away. Then, the object of his love comes to him through the singers, and he feels a sudden sense of relief, as if he’s been healed from his sickness. The use of metaphors in description shows that the person he loves is someone of importance to him and has the power to make everything better. The line “you would love me like a mother, cooling me with freezing baptisms” indicates a maternal, nurturing kind of love that has healing properties just like how the water in the baptism cools and refreshes after being heated up.

The second verse shows the singer’s newfound understanding and acceptance of the one he loves. He’s been struggling for a long time to say his love’s name without fear of finding out he’s been fooled. But then, his love shows him his hands, and he sees the wounds, the holes in them that spell forgiveness. These wounds are used as symbolism for love and salvation. He compares himself with Paul, a reference to the Apostle Paul in the Bible who had a spiritual transformation and became an important figure in Christianity. He accepts that he’s a sinner, but his love has taken out the thorns, represented as his problems or troubles, and “wears them all as a crown”. This play on words means that his problems don't have power over him anymore, and his newfound love and understanding have helped him rise above his shortcomings.

Overall, the song “Fever” portrays the journey of finding salvation and love through the person the singer loves. The pain and turmoil he faced at the beginning of the song has been replaced by healing and forgiveness, all due to the person he loves. The lyrics are poetic and use powerful metaphors to convey the singer’s feelings.

My favs from this station are in this order

1. Be Startin' Somethin'
2. Automatic
3. I'll Be Good
4. And The Beat Goes On
5. Act Like You Know
6. Shame

This legit out does most 80's Soul/R&B mix albums found in stores... Especially those with the dreaded live versions.
