Thinking of You
The Colour Field Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
i ought to be thinking of you
but the friendship's built on trust
and that's something you never do
well who knows maybe tomorrow
we can share each other's sorrow
and compare our grave manner
as we wave our lonely banners
if you ever think of me
i'll be thinking of you
if you decide to change your views
i'm hinking of you
you can walk away from loneliness
anytime you choose
and you're the sort of person
that hasn't anything to lose
but who cares maybe tomorrow
you can lead and i could follow
so walk where angels fear to tread
for everything you've ever wanted
and if you ever think of me
i'll be thinking of you
if you can spare an hour or two
you'll know what to do
i could be the one thing there
in your our of need
so if you decide to change your views
i'm thinking of you
let's roll the dice
in the fools paradise...
share moonlit nights
breathing nothing but lies
let's open our eyes...
we should take a bus to somewhere else
to somewhere new
thank god we're alive
and bite off more than we can chew
do the things that just don't matter
laugh while others look in anger
stumble over four leaf clovers
and say goodbye to lonely banners
if you ever think of me
i'll be thinking of you
through thick and thin i bear it and grin
and never give in
if you ever think of me
i'll be thinking of you
through thick and thin i bear it and grin
and never give in
i could be the one thing there
in your our of need
so if you decide to change your views
i'm thinking of you
The Colour Field's "Thinking of You" is a song that expresses the confusion and uncertainty that comes with a relationship that could potentially be more than just friendship. The song is written from the perspective of someone who is struggling with their feelings and trying to figure out if the other person feels the same way. Although the singer of the song knows they should be thinking about the person they are attracted to, they are aware that their current friendship is built on trust, which they don't want to break. They are hopeful that maybe tomorrow they can share their sorrows and compare their grave manner, even as they continue to wave their lonely banners.
Despite the confusion and uncertainty, the song is imbued with hope. The singer believes that they could be there for the other person in their hour of need and that they could do things that just don't matter, stumble over four-leaf clovers, and say goodbye to lonely banners together. The song's lyrics suggest that the singer is willing to take a leap of faith and explore the possibility of a more intimate relationship, but they are also willing to accept that the other person may not feel the same way. Ultimately, the song is about the power of hope, even in the face of uncertainty.

i guess i kinda sort of know
I have a vague idea that I should be thinking of you
i ought to be thinking of you
I should be focusing my thoughts on you
but the friendship's built on trust
However, our relationship is based on trust
and that's something you never do
And that's something you don't reciprocate
well who knows maybe tomorrow
But who knows, things may change in the future
we can share each other's sorrow
We could console each other during tough times
and compare our grave manner
And discuss how we deal with serious situations
as we wave our lonely banners
As we try to cope with loneliness
if you ever think of me
If you ever have me on your mind
i'll be thinking of you
I'll be reciprocating those thoughts
if you decide to change your views
If you decide to have a different perspective
i'm thinking of you
I still have you on my mind
you can walk away from loneliness
You can choose to escape loneliness
anytime you choose
Whenever you feel the need
and you're the sort of person
You're the type of individual
that hasn't anything to lose
Who doesn't really have anything to lose
but who cares maybe tomorrow
But it doesn't matter, things may change in the future
you can lead and i could follow
You could take charge and I can follow your lead
so walk where angels fear to tread
We can take risks and explore uncharted territories
for everything you've ever wanted
In pursuit of everything you've always dreamed of
if you can spare an hour or two
If you have some time to spare
you'll know what to do
You'll know how to spend that time
i could be the one thing there
I could be the one thing that's there
in your our of need
When you require assistance
so if you decide to change your views
Therefore, if you change your outlook
let's roll the dice
Let's take a chance
in the fools paradise...
In a place that might not be realistic
share moonlit nights
Spend romantic evenings together
breathing nothing but lies
Living in a world of falsehoods
let's open our eyes...
Let's open our minds
we should take a bus to somewhere else
We should make a dramatic change in our lives
to somewhere new
To an unexplored place
thank god we're alive
We should be grateful for our existence
and bite off more than we can chew
And take on more than we can handle
do the things that just don't matter
Do things that aren't necessarily consequential
laugh while others look in anger
Find joy while others are angry or unhappy
stumble over four leaf clovers
Find luck even in uneventful moments
and say goodbye to lonely banners
And let go of our lonely perspective
through thick and thin i bear it and grin
No matter the circumstance, I'll carry on with a smile
and never give in
And show perseverance

So sad to hear of the passing of Terry Hall. Such an immense part of my teenage years. What an incredible catalogue of songs he has left us π’

Both Terry Hall and Kirsty Maccoll are very underrated! So much more to Terry than just the specials! This is a classic and always will be!!!!

Very sad too on hearing the news 10 minutes ago. Terry Hall was a very, very brave guy. By being open about his past, he must have helped thousands of adults deal with mental health problems stemming from childhood 'experiences'. I was slightly too young for the Specials but I bought everything by the Fun Boy 3 and I played the first Colourfield LP to death. I can't think of anyone else in music remotely like him. 63 is no age at all. Very sad.
