What Can I Say

That I could never hurt you, but I thought to
And ever since you've gone I've been living like nothing
Ever could go wrong, but it turned into something
Now I can't think about you, 'cause it hurts to
It started off so nicely, I'd hold you,
We'd talk about our dreams til one or two
And if you get your hopes high, they'll crush you
Now I can't think about you, 'cause it hurts to
What can I say, what can I say, you've been gone for way too long
What can I say, what can I say, I gave my heart away
I gave my heart away (I can't think about you, 'cause it hurts to)
I gave it all away (I can't think about you, 'cause it hurts to)
And ever since you met me, I told you
I need someone to talk to, get close to
'Cause when I think I'll see you, there's an excuse
And there's nothing to talk through, you're not here to
So I've got to forget you and I'm trying to
I can't think about you, 'cause it hurts to
I can't think about you, 'cause it hurts to
What can I say, what can I say, you've been gone for way too long
What can I say, what can I say, I gave my heart away
I gave my heart away (I can't think about you, 'cause it hurts to)
I gave it all away (I can't think about you, 'cause it hurts to)
I can't think about you 'cause it hurts to
I can't think about you 'cause it hurts to
I say, I can't think about you 'cause it hurts to
I can't think about you 'cause it hurts to
I can't think about you 'cause it hurts to
The Colourist's song What Can I Say speaks about the pain and regret one feels after giving their heart to someone who is no longer in their life. The song starts off by the singer telling the person they gave their heart to that they could never hurt them, but the truth is that they did hurt them. The singer is then left with the pain of losing this person and trying to move on, but they can't stop thinking about them because it hurts too much. The lyrics "What can I say, what can I say, you've been gone for way too long" and "I gave my heart away" convey the deep emotional pain the singer is feeling.
The second verse speaks about how everything started off great between the two people - they talked about their dreams and held each other - until things fell apart. The singer mentions how dreaming of a future together does no good if it doesn't become a reality. The chorus repeats again to show how the singer can't stop thinking about this person, and they gave their heart away even though it ended up hurting them so much. The last verse talks about how the singer needs someone to talk to and get close to, but they can't do that with the person they gave their heart to because they're no longer around. The song ends with the repeated phrase "I can't think about you 'cause it hurts to," underscoring the immense pain the singer is feeling.
