Formed in 1991 by working class music manager Jimmy Rabitte, The Commitments performes a unique blend of soul music, described by trumpeter Joey "The Lips" Fagan as "Dublin soul." Featuring Deco Cuffe on lead vocals, Imelda Quirke, Natalie Murphy and Bernie McGloughlin as female backing vocalists, Outspan Foster on lead guitar, Dean Fay on bass, Steven Clifford on keys, Derek Scully and Joey "The Lips" Fagan on trumpet and Billy Mooney on drums, The Commitments were successful in local venues in North Dublin. During the final months of their original run, Mooney left the band and was replaced by former security guard Micko Wallace. The group disbanded in late 1991 after a hectic club show – at which the band were to be joined by Wilson Pickett – and due to internal affairs, just minutes before the band were offered a record deal.
In 2010, the band reformed and are set to perform a number of dates.
The movie was also the breakthrough for singer Andrew Strong.

Into each heart, some tears must fall
Though you love and loose, you must stand tall
'Cause we all got to cry sometimes, I said, sigh sometimes
Pull yourself together, no use crying forever
Because there's too many fish in the sea
I said, there's short ones, tall ones, fine ones, kind ones
Too many fish in the sea
My mama once told me something and every word is true
Don't waste your time on a fella who doesn't love you
He'll only mislead you, only grieve you
Don't worry about him baby, you can do it without him
Because there's too many fish in the sea
Too many fish in the sea
I said, there's short ones, tall ones, fine ones, kind ones
Too many fish in the sea
Well, if that fish isn't on your line
Bait your hook and keep on trying
You don't let him get you down
There's other boys around
There's too many fish in the sea
Too many fish in the sea
I said, there's short ones, tall ones, fine ones, kind ones
Too many fish in the sea
I don't want nobody that don't want me
Too many fish in the sea
Ain't gonna love nobody that don't love me now
Too many fish in the sea
I don't need nobody that don't need me
Too many fish in the sea
I don't want nobody that don't want me now
Too many fish in the sea
Ain't gonna love nobody that don't love me?
Too many fish in the sea
Ain't gonna love nobody that don't love me now?
Too many fish in the sea
I don't want nobody that don't want me?
Too many fish in the sea
I don't want nobody that don't want me
Too many fish in the, too many fish in the sea
The Commitments's song Too Many Fish In The Sea contains messages of resilience and self-empowerment. The chorus "too many fish in the sea" is a metaphor for the abundance of options in life, and how there is always a chance to find someone or something better. Through the lyrics, the singer advises the female audience to stand tall despite heartbreaks, and that dwelling on those who don't love us is futile since there are plenty of others out there. The song even gives advice on how to keep on trying to find the right one: keep baiting the hook.
The song also highlights the importance of self-love and the idea that we should not settle for less than we deserve. The lines "I don't want nobody that don't want me" and "I don't need nobody that don't need me" emphasize the value of mutual love and respect in a relationship. Overall, the song's timeless message of self-love and resilience make it an enduring anthem.
