Orginally consisting of the duo DeLange and Waylon (who had known each other prior to performing together), they first performed in 2013 for a concert in Enschede. Subsequently, Waylon left the group in June 2014 and was replaced by American country singer Jake Etheridge.
Their song Calm After the Storm reached second place in the final of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest (giving The Netherlands their best result since 1975) and was a hit throughout Europe. Released as their first single in March 2014, the song won two Marcel Bezençon Awards. The band's first (eponymous) album, which features Calm After the Storm, was released in May 2014.

Counting mile marker signs
The empty seat beside me
Keeps you on my mind
Livin' in the heartache
Was never something I pursued
I can't keep on chasing
Ooh skies are black and blue
I'm thinking about you
Here in the calm after the storm
Tears on the highway
Water in my eyes
This rain ain't gonna change us
So what's the use to cry?
I could say I'm sorry
But I don't wanna lie
I just wanna know if staying
Is better than goodbye
Ooh skies are black and blue
I'm thinking about you
Here in the calm after the storm
Ooh after all that we've been through
There ain't nothing new
Here in the calm after the storm
Maybe I can find you
Down this broken line
Maybe you can find me
I guess we'll know in time
Ooh skies are black and blue
I'm thinking about you
Here in the calm after the storm
Ooh after all that we've been through
There ain't nothing new
Here in the calm after the storm
There ain't nothing new
Here in the calm after the storm
The Common Linnets' hit song Calm After the Storm is an emotional ballad that tells a story of a couple who just went through a rough patch in their relationship. The lyrics are vivid, and they depict the hardships and the emotional pain that both partners experienced during the tough times. The opening verse sets the tone for the entire song and builds the foundation for the narrative. The singer is driving fast on a highway, and the empty seat beside her reminds her of her partner who is still on her mind even though they are physically apart.
The second verse reflects on the sorrow and heartache that the couple experienced during their tough times together. The memories of the pain and suffering are still present in their hearts, but the singer tries not to dwell on them too much. She wonders whether staying together is worth it, and whether it will bring them closer or lead them to a bitter end. The chorus continues the theme of calm after the storm, indicating that even though the skies are still dark and blue, there is hope that things will get better. The final verse hints at the possibility of the couple reuniting and finding each other again, indicating that there is still a spark left in their love.

Seven years on and I still don’t know why this didn’t win

Because someone had a beard.
@c.h.1066
Me too. But Conchita Wurst was also a very strong competitor that year (even with or without the beard)
@c.h.1066
@@freekvonk8586 I guess, that she also would've won without the beard. It was such a strong song.
