The band's music is a mixture of 1960s-style psychedelia and folk-rock with old-fashioned country and modern alternative rock influences. The Coral have released nine albums (The Coral, Magic and Medicine, Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker, The Invisible Invasion, Roots & Echoes, The Singles Collection/Magic & Mysteries, Butterfly House, The Curse of Love, and Distance Inbetween). Their self-titled debut album was nominated for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize and later voted the fourth best album of the year by NME Magazine. It was announced on 9 January 2008 that Bill Ryder-Jones would be leaving, but the band would continue as a 5-piece.

On the 13th floor
Conspiracy in the corridors
I'll take you down
Down to cripples crown
What should you say? What can you do?
Satellites are watching you
I'll take you down
Down to cripples crown
I'll take you down
Down to cripples crown
At this dark hour
Who'll be there?
Open the door
If you dare
Venus fly trap on the stairs
I'll take you down
Down to cripples crown
There'll be no time
There'll be no tears
The elavator disappears
I'll take you down
Down to cripples crown
I'll take you down
Down to cripples crown
Cripples crown

Cripples crown
The Coral's "Cripples Crown" features abstract and surreal imagery that creates a sense of eerie and foreboding mystery. The first lines, "Unopened door, On the 13th floor, Conspiracy in the corridors," suggest that the singer is exploring an unfamiliar space and becoming aware of potential danger lurking in the shadows. The second verse adds to this sense of unease with the line, "Satellites are watching you," conjuring ideas of surveillance and paranoia.
The chorus, "I'll take you down, Down to Cripples Crown," reinforces the ominous tone and creates a feeling of impending doom. The repeated phrase "Cripples Crown" adds to the mystique of the song, suggesting something both powerful and malevolent. The final verse includes the line "Venus fly trap on the stairs," which is a vivid and unsettling image.
Overall, "Cripples Crown" employs a kind of dream logic, with the lyrics jumping between seemingly disparate concepts and images. However, the consistent tone of uncertainty and danger ties it all together into a coherent and compelling narrative.
