The band's music is a mixture of 1960s-style psychedelia and folk-rock with old-fashioned country and modern alternative rock influences. The Coral have released nine albums (The Coral, Magic and Medicine, Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker, The Invisible Invasion, Roots & Echoes, The Singles Collection/Magic & Mysteries, Butterfly House, The Curse of Love, and Distance Inbetween). Their self-titled debut album was nominated for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize and later voted the fourth best album of the year by NME Magazine. It was announced on 9 January 2008 that Bill Ryder-Jones would be leaving, but the band would continue as a 5-piece.

The Coral Lyrics

Go to the shop, make plans to be leaving
In the morning
Thought I was sleeping, it was just a dream
An ally cat chewing on dead leaves
In the morning
Out of the dark and into the lightWhen the morning comes, I will be alright
When I leave I try not to wake her
Tea and a toast to yesterday's capers
In the morning
She wrote my name on a red telephone box
When I got there she'd already rubbed it off
In the morning
Out of the dark and into the light
When the morning comes, I will be alright
And all this time, I've watched it change
But it's still the same
In the morning
In the morning
In the morning
In the morning
The lyrics to The Coral's "In the Morning" paint a nostalgic story of someone leaving in the morning, possibly for good. The first verse describes the act of shutting the bedroom window and making plans to leave, setting the stage for a departure in the near future. The line "Thought I was sleeping, it was just a dream" includes a clever twist; the singer realizes they were not asleep and must deal with the harsh reality of leaving. The image of an ally cat chewing on dead leaves suggests a desolate, lonely setting, which could represent how the singer feels about leaving.
The second verse brings back memories of the past. The singer reminisces on the events of the prior day, drinking tea and eating toast while reflecting on the "yesterday's capers." The image of the red telephone box with the singer's name suggests a personal connection, but the fact that the name was already rubbed off indicates that this connection may have been lost. The repetition of "In the morning" throughout the song serves to remind the listener of the inevitability of change and the passing of time, creating a melancholic feeling.
The song's overall message seems to be coming to terms with leaving the past behind and moving on. The line "Out of the dark and into the light" reinforces this idea; although the situation may be bleak, there is still hope for a brighter future. The idea that time changes everything is represented in the line "And all this time, I've watched it change, but it's still the same." The singer acknowledges that although things may be different now, the essential nature of some things remains unchanged.
