The band's music is a mixture of 1960s-style psychedelia and folk-rock with old-fashioned country and modern alternative rock influences. The Coral have released nine albums (The Coral, Magic and Medicine, Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker, The Invisible Invasion, Roots & Echoes, The Singles Collection/Magic & Mysteries, Butterfly House, The Curse of Love, and Distance Inbetween). Their self-titled debut album was nominated for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize and later voted the fourth best album of the year by NME Magazine. It was announced on 9 January 2008 that Bill Ryder-Jones would be leaving, but the band would continue as a 5-piece.
Late Afternoon
The Coral Lyrics

Smoke fills the room
The actor sighs
Dogs barking outside
The night seems the same
It sleeps in the day
The actress cries For their last goodbyes
It's always this way
Everytime
You're passing me by
On days like these
Walk to the sea
It's too hard to find
Mirrors collide
The end of the street
The place where we meet
With tears in our eyes
Stay for a while
It's always the same
Everytime
You're passing me by
It's late afternoon
You enter the room
The music dies
And leaves us behind
It's all just a game
Everytime
The Coral's "Late Afternoon" is a hauntingly beautiful song that captures the melancholia of an old relationship that has lost its spark. The song is about two lovers who have grown apart and are trying to come to terms with the inevitable end of their relationship. The scene is set in the late afternoon, where smoke fills the room, and dogs are barking outside. The atmosphere is tense, and the actor sighs, while the actress cries for their last goodbyes.
The lyrics are poignant and beautifully crafted, as they describe the ephemeral nature of love and how it can fade away with time. The night seems to sleep in the day, and it's always the same every time you're passing me by. The lovers are unable to find a way to rekindle their feelings for each other, and the mirrors collide as they face the bitter reality that their relationship has reached its end.
The end of the street is the place where they meet, with tears in their eyes, trying to hold on to the last moments of their love. The music dies, and they are left behind, playing a game that they know they cannot win. The late afternoon is a time of transition, where the past meets the present, and the future is uncertain. The song captures the sense of nostalgia and loss that comes with the end of a relationship, as the lovers try to find closure and move on with their lives.
