Shadows Fall
The Coral Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Morning comes darkness drops
Upon this day a shadow falls
Silence warps through the halls
Since I've been gone, gone, gone

A hundred years from today
Lamplights ablaze? paves my way
Till Jesus saves my early grave
I will be gone, gone, gone

Drop the anchor lift my heart
From stem to stern I'm torn apart
Mount my horse? pack my cart?
Tomorrow I'm gone, gone, gone

Seek the hull? leave the deck
Silver moon silhouette
In due time you will forget
That I am gone, gone, gone
I will be gone, gone, gone

Since I've been gone, gone, gone
Tomorrow I'm gone, gone, gone

Overall Meaning

The given lyrics to The Coral's song Shadows Fall are a melancholic and introspective musing on mortality and the cycle of life. The song describes the singer's acceptance that their time on earth is limited and that they will eventually become forgotten by those they leave behind. The opening line, "Morning comes darkness drops, upon this day a shadow falls," signifies the cycle of life and how every morning brings with it the potential for a new beginning, but also the inevitability of the end.

The singer goes on to describe how they will be gone, gone, gone, expressing a sense of resignation to their fate. They describe how a hundred years from today, their presence will be nothing more than a memory, as they will have long since passed away. They reference Jesus saving their early grave, possibly an allusion to the belief in the afterlife or resurrection.

The final verse speaks to the singer's desire to leave their mark on the world before they are gone, but ultimately acknowledging that their time is up. The reference to a "silver moon silhouette" adds a sense of beauty to the sadness of the song, and the repeated "gone, gone, gone" emphasizes the inevitability of the singer's departure.

Overall, Shadows Fall is a hauntingly beautiful and thought-provoking song that touches on themes of mortality, acceptance, and the impermanence of life.

Standout tune from a phenomenal album. So chilled.

YEP....this a classic from their great debut album....this band reminds me of the LA's......both bands were from the Liverpool area

Long live The La's! Just listening to The Coral for the first time. Come on, compare Spanish Main to Liberty Ship, no comparison! Liberty Ship turns shanties on their head with deep meaningful lyrics - about the ship labour slaves. Far from the  boring standard non rhythmical style as well.  This is the first long on the album I like, kind of. Of all Coral songs I've heard I like In The Morning most so far. Still silly lyrics though but that's ok.
