No Frontiers
The Corrs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If life is a river and your heart is a boat
And just like a water baby, baby born to float
And if life is a wild wind that blows way on high
And your heart is Amelia dying to fly
Heaven knows no frontiers and I've seen heaven in your eyes

And if life is a bar room in which we must wait
'Round the man with his fingers on the ivory gates
Where we sing until dawn of our fears and our fates
And we stack all the dead men in self addressed crates

In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day
When fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its ways

Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes

If your life is a rough bed of brambles and nails
And your spirit's a slave to man's whips and man's jails

Where you thirst and you hunger for justice and right
And your heart is a pure flame of man's constant night

In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day when fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its ways
And heaven has its ways
When all will harmonise
And you know what's in our hearts
The dream will realise

Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Corrs' song No Frontiers speak of the boundlessness of love and the hope it brings amidst the challenges of life. The opening lines use the metaphor of life as a river and the heart as a boat born to float on its currents. Like a water baby, one must allow oneself to be carried on the journey, trusting in the power of the river to take them where they need to go. The next lines compare life to a wild wind that one's heart desires to fly in. Amelia is a reference to Amelia Earhart, the pioneering aviator who disappeared while attempting to fly across the Pacific Ocean. Her story represents the desire to push beyond boundaries in pursuit of one's dreams. The chorus declares that heaven knows no frontiers and the singer has seen glimpses of it in their beloved's eyes. The idea of heaven as a limitless space beyond earthly constraints reinforces the idea that love has no material boundaries.

The next verse uses the metaphor of life as a barroom where people wait for their fate, singing of their fears and stacking the dead in crates. This line possibly reflects Ireland's history of political turmoil and violence, where small communities were often deeply affected by the actions of those in power. The image of stacking the dead in self-addressed crates represents a collective fear of not knowing how one might survive the struggles of life. Despite this, the singer points out that the faint flicker of hope in the eyes of their beloved is enough to warm the coldness of the black night, providing comfort until the day when fear loses its grip and heaven finds a way to harmonize all.

The dream will realise
The dream of a better world, of a better self, of a better future, will come true, as long as we keep the flame alive, as long as we keep singing, keep dreaming, keep living.

And I've found a glimpse of heaven, a hint of divinity, a sense of wonder, a spark of magic, a ray of hope, in your eyes, in your smile, in your touch, in your embrace, in your love, in your being.

I've probably watched the several different versions of the live performance of this song 150 times and it makes my eyes misty EVERY time. While Andrea mesmerized everyone, it was Sharon who rocked my world. But, in this instance, Caroline is so sweet and vulnerable when she comes from behind the drums to sing this masterpiece with her sister during the Lansdowne concert. One of the best live performances of any song I've ever seen.

@MrAestheticism

This is literally the unplugged recording. But I agree it's all great.
