One Tin Soldier
The Coven Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen children to a story
That was written long ago
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley folk below
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath a stone
And the valley people swore
They'd have it for their very own

[Chorus]
Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of Heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowin'
Come the judgement day
On the bloody mornin' after
One tin soldier rides away

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the asking for
The buried treasure
Tons of gold for which they'd kill
Came an answer from the kingdom
With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain
All the riches buried there

[Chorus]

Now the valley cried with anger
Mount your horses
Draw your swords
And they killed the mountain people
So they won their just reward
Now they stood beside the treasure
On the mountain dark and red
Turned the stone and looked beneath it
'Peace on Earth' was all it said

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The Coven's song "One Tin Soldier" describes a kingdom on a mountain and a group of valley people who desire the treasure that lies buried beneath a single stone on this mountain. The people from the valley sent a message to the kingdom asking for the buried treasure, with the intention to kill for the tons of gold. However, the kingdom replied that they would share the secrets and riches with their brothers. In the end, after much anger and bloodshed between the two groups, the valley people triumphed and found the buried treasure. Underneath the treasure, though, they found no riches or gold, only the message "peace on Earth."

The lyrics of "One Tin Soldier" are a cautionary tale about greed and the destructive nature of self-centeredness. It suggests that people are willing to harm each other in order to satisfy their own desires, and will often ignore the cost of such actions until it is too late. The chorus "Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend, do it in the name of heaven, you can justify it in the end" emphasizes this idea, that people can twist religion and morality to justify their cruel deeds.

It is 17 December, 2023 as I comment. I was just introduced to this song late last night by one of my dearest friends. It is entirely apropos to what is presently in progress on several continents of this planet. It was written in 1969, and it is relevant nearly 55 years later in more ways than one.
