The band was formed in the spring of 1965 by four brothers — Barry, Bill, Bob, and John Cowsill. After their initial success, the brothers were later joined by their siblings, Susan and Paul and their mother, Barbara. Rounding out the group was remaining brother Richard, who did not sing with the group, but was assigned as road manager and advisor.

Origins And Early Successes

Originally inspired by The Beatles, the Cowsills developed their musicianship and harmonized vocals in performances at school dances and churches in their hometown. They were encouraged by their parents, Barbara and Bud Cowsill, who drove them around to shows in the family's station wagon. Bud had retired from a long career in the US Navy to manage his children's career together with his wife.

The band drew increasing attention through the 1960's as their musical proficiency improved. In late 1965, the initial four members were hired as a regular act on Bannisters Wharf in Newport where they would sing "The Beatles" songs hour after hour. They also produced their first recordings, and released them on Mercury Records. Despite their appeal, the company passed on a record contract for reasons never specified. In 1966, the band was signed by MGM records, and shortly after Barbara - who would become known to their fans affectionately as "Mini-Mom" due to her diminutive stature - joined the group to record The Rain, The Park and Other Things. Shortly thereafter the band was expanded yet again to include siblings Susan and Paul.

With the success of "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" the band quickly became a popular act in the U.S., and achieved significant airplay in England and other parts of Europe. "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" wound up reaching #2 on the Billboard charts, and sold some three million copies in its first release.

Bob Cowsill is quoted as follows on the band's early days:

"Although Bill and I performed at a very young age, and Bill, myself, Barry and John did a lot of frat parties at Brown University and clubs in Newport ... the most memorable performance of what I would view as the precursor of what The Cowsills would be was at King's Park in Newport (right at the foot of Halidon Hall) at some carnival. The family angle just evolved ... first Bill and me, then Bill me and Barry, then Bill, me, Barry and John, then Bill, me, Barry, John and Mom, then Bill, me, Barry, John, Mom and Paul, then later, me, Paul, John, Barry, Mom and Susan, then back to Bill, me, Barry and John (very briefly in the end) and then to me, Paul, John and Susan. Our first real break came when we were playing the MK Hotel in Newport (in the basement there) and a guy from the Today show saw us and asked if we wanted to be on the Today show. We weren't famous or anything but we were young and we were related and we were quite good. So we went on the Today show (I doubt a tape exists of that but if it did it would be priceless to see) and someone from Mercury Records saw us which ultimately led to our signing with that label and putting out "Most Of All" (a great "school's out" song that should have been our first hit in my opinion) which led to Artie Kornfeld and Steve Duboff. Mercury dropped us, but Artie and Steve had written "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" and we went in and recorded that song at A&R studios in New York and took the whole package to MGM who decided wouldn't it just be terrific if their mother performed with them and, voila, the rest, as they say, is history. "

In 1969 they had another number two hit with their version of the title song from the musical Hair.

The Cowsills are often cited as the inspirtation for TV's "The Partridge Family."

@@Mr.56Goldtop - Sorry but no, those adorable moves that she did as a child/adolescent were predicated on her body type at the time. When we start gaining weight we begin to lose the ability to do that, and even if we move the same, the overall visual effect is not the same. But I still love her now just the way she is.

David Bellardo Because back then they had to improvise and come up with ways to do it all themselves. It helped that they were a family. Their voices had such harmonies. Also, there is NO WAY they could EVER choreograph Suzi's unique dancing! She just HAD to have made it up herself!! Kids today only need a computer...that's why it has no true soul.

Yes! For sure we had to be creative to full our days. We were really creative, sometimes making our own board games, with rules and all. Made dolls clothes. Played Jack's, hopscotch, jump rope, twister, hand ball and rode bikes.

Amazing musicality, as evidenced with this LIVE performance!! Cowsills had incredible talent and laser accurate pitch which enabled them to achieve wonderfully satisfying harmonies. Sure, the song is "dated" and aimed at a 1960's audience but the fact is, MnP's could never have performed Monday Monday this well LIVE. Their public performances were, instead, lip synced because their original recorded sound that the audience expected was achieved by the use of tracks on tracks in the mixing lab, a creative technique pioneered by John Phillips. Cowsills reproduced that unique, accurate multi-voice sound LIVE. Big difference in ability. Cowsills also had the advantage of 6 voices, all good, where MnP had 4 with Michelle being carried along with the help of the other 3. Without Cass the female tracks would have been far less inspiring. Don't get me wrong, I loved MnP's and they form a huge part of my early teenage music memories.

I was 17 or 18 back then. Didn't watch this show or least don't remember seeing it. But I would have had woody or at least a partial looking at the mother in the middle. The sixties were great. I was in eighth grade when the Beatles landed in America. Real special times. The Summer of Love was magic. The Summers of 1968 and especially 1969 I wouldn't trade for anything, even if someone came up with a way to erase those years and turn me into a teenager in the here and now. Great cover!

Yes, and on "Hello, Hello" from that album, doesn't it just turn you to jelly? Just a wee bit shy at the start, and then her voice soars. And of course here she exhudes all the confidence of her big brothers. Mini Mom was the shy one. Listen to Susan's CD 'Just Believe It' and you will know/hear/feel the truly incredible talent she has become. Cowsills forever!

The Cowsills are my favorite and the first record I bought with my own money was the Cowsills. I am truly their biggest fan. Howver they never come to Charlotte NC. RE: The Cowsills. In interviews I heard that they were just about broke at the end and later in life because their funds were mismanaged and all their trips and everything was done on credits cards in advance but their funds were mishandled The same as what happened to singer David Cassidy, had so many expenses and people on his own payroll . Felt so bad when their mother died of Cancer now I read that two of the eldest brothers passed on as well. What is also very sad is that the child actress Suzanne Crough whom played the little tambourine girl on the Partridge Family , she died in 2015 in her early 50's and her character was fashioned after little Susan Cowsill

Billy died in Feb. 2006 just after Barry's memorial service. Billy had numerous things wrong with him and his body just gave up. Barry died in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He was found I think just after Christmas 2005.

Richard was Bob's fraternal twin and never performed with them. He did a little appearance in 2000 or thereabouts with the rest of the family but he was the ONLY Cowsill kid never to perform like the rest. I don't know why.

She died in 1985 from emphesyma. According to sources, she was born in 1928, so that made her in her late 30s, early 40's during their popularity. I love this clip and I feel that they never got the credit they deserved, They certainly knew how to sing and they played their own insturments. And to boot, they were quite good,. Nothing like 60s, 70s and 80's pop. I miss it so much. There is nothing in the music of the 00's that even comes close to being as good.
