The Cranberries Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't think it's going to happen anymore
You took my thoughts from me, now I want nothing more
And did you think you could just take it all away
I don't think it's happening, this is what I say

Leave me alone
Leave me alone
Leave me alone
'Cause I found it all
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One

So I don't think it's going to happen anymore
I don't think it's going to happen anymore

Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One

Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One

Today
Today
Today
Today

Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One
Twenty One

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Cranberries' song "Twenty One" are a reflection on a lost relationship. The singer begins by stating, "I don't think it's going to happen anymore" and goes on to express their disappointment and heartbreak. Their thoughts have been taken away by their former partner, leaving them with nothing more to desire. The singer questions if their partner thought they could just take away everything without consequence. Despite the previous hopes of reconciliation, the singer states firmly that they don't think it's going to happen anymore, reassuring themselves of their decision to move on.

The repetition of "Twenty One" throughout the song adds to its overall impact. It could refer to the age of the singer or their former partner, emphasizing the sense of young love that was lost. The chorus, where the singer begs to be left alone, highlights their struggle to move on from the relationship. The repetition of "Today" at the end of the song could symbolize a fresh start or the singer's decision to live in the present.

Overall, "Twenty One" is a powerful song that portrays the emotional pain of lost love. The lyrics are straightforward yet impactful, and the repetition of certain phrases adds to the song's overall message.

Lying in my bed again And I cry 'cause you're not here
Crying in my head again
And I know that it's not clear
Put your hands, put your hands
Inside my face and see that it's just you
But it's bad and it's mad
And it's making me sad
Because I can't be with you
Be with you, be with you
Be with you, be with you
Be with you, be with you
Baby, I can't be with you
Thinking back on how things were
And on how we loved so well
I wanted to be the mother of your child
And now it's just farewell
Put your hands in my hands
And come with me
We'll find another end
And my head, and my head
On anyone's shoulder
'Cause I can't be with you
Be with you, be with you
Be with you, be with you
Be with you, be with you
Baby, I can't be with you
'Cause you're not here, you're not here
Baby, I can't be with you
'Cause you're not here, you're not here
Baby, still in love with you
Still in love with you
When I'm still in love with you
Na na na na
Still in love with you
When I'm still in love with you
Na na na na
Still in love with you
When I'm still in love with you

Still in love with you. [X 6]

Dolores was my husband's favourite singer. Her songs were part of our life. Dreams was even played at our wedding in 2005. My husband committed suicide in 2012 and anytime I've heard a Cranberries song since, my heart was torn apart. Especially this one. "Lying in my bed again and I cry 'cause you're not here..." He would have been so devastated by the news... With her gone, that's another small part of him which dies again... They were two tormented souls. I hope they've both found peace now... RIP.

Croatia, the nineties, after the war, empty parking near the sea, girl, the old Yugo 55 and this on cassette deck... Best days of my life. Thank you Dolores
