Simple Things
The Crash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Simple Things
We want all very simple things
but we know very little
And so we get very complicated stuff
love and such, 'cause all in all we're beautiful

How easily we fall in love
You walk to me, you talk to me
And sudden glances fall upon you and me
This harmony was meant to be a symphony

We all assume that we rule our lives
but we can't even hold our breath
Who knows how suddenly worlds are turning
how suddenly things may change?
We are so terribly unpredictable and wonderful
Just turn around and I'll be gone

How easily we fall in love
You walk to me, you talk to me
Then suddenly you go again
I'm losing you, I'm losing you
Oh talk to me, I'm losing you

And now, it's all very simple now
I hope you get this love alive, as easy as it is

How easily we fall in love
You walk to me, you talk to me
And suddenly you're far away
I'm losing you, I'm losing you
Then silently you answer me:

"You're fading out, I'm losing you"
Oh talk to me. I'm holding on

Overall Meaning

The Crash's song "Simple Things" talks about how we all desire simple things in life, yet we end up making things complicated. The lyrics speak about how we fall in love easily and how the moments spent with our loved ones are often so fleeting. The song tells us that life is unpredictable, and we are wonderfully unpredictable just as well.

The first two lines of the song set the premise of the song: we all want simple things, but we make everything so complicated, especially love. It talks about how we fall in love quickly - someone walks up to us, starts talking to us, and then suddenly we are struck by the love bug. The following lines talk about how love was meant to be and that "this harmony was meant to be a symphony." It is an affirmation that some relationships are destiny and make perfect sense.

The next set of lyrics talks about how unpredictable life can be. We assume that we have control over our lives, but we cannot even hold our breath. The song acknowledges the fact that we are wonderfully unpredictable as well. The last few lines switch back to the initial emotions of the song. It speaks about how love can be lost easily, but we hold on to it regardless. The chorus repeats the themes of the first verse, highlighting our universal desire for simple things.
