The Creatures' song So Unreal is a commentary on the surrealness of modern life, in which individuals are increasingly disconnected from their emotions and their true selves. The singer is talking to someone close to them – a friend or perhaps a lover – who has changed irrevocably. The person they are speaking to is no longer recognizable, yet they still bear a passing resemblance to the person the singer once knew.
The singer describes how their friend has become robotic and insincere: they talk in a "tidy room" that seems sterile and false; their words are like a "commercial for a serial." The friend is so out of touch with their emotions and instincts that they no longer seem real to the singer. The singer wishes that their friend could experience the same level of authenticity and connection they once shared, but alas, they are too far gone.
In the second half of the song, the singer expresses frustration and disappointment that their friend is no longer present. The friend has become obsessed with living up to an ideal, which means they never show their true selves or experience real emotion. The singer wants their friend to embrace their true self again, to "get up and wash at the right time of day" and "greet the world with the right thing to say." However, they fear that this person is lost to them forever.
