The Crocodiles Lyrics

You've got behind, you're somewhere back in '58
I guess it goes to show how wrong a girl can be
I'm standing right in front of you you can't see me
Tears
I feel them on my cheeks
Tears
Tears
I'm back here at the start
Tears
Tearing me apart
You said you were an agency for paradise
I went along, it slipped my mind to check the price
Tears
I feel them on my cheeks
Tears
I've been this way for weeks
Tears
I'm back here at the start
Tears
Tearing me apart
You say you love me still, it's a lie
You say you always will, tell me why
All you ever do is make me cry
Tears
If this is love I'd like to kick it
Tears
You've picked me up so you can put me down again
I guess it must be true those things they say about men
They're all around they try to tell me it's ok
Yeah
They way I feel, I'd like to push them all away
Tears
I feel them on my cheeks
Tears
I've been this way for weeks
Tears
I'm back here at the start
Tears
Tearing me apart
Tears
I feel them on my cheeks
Tears
I've been this way for weeks
Tears
I'm back here at the start
Tears
Tearing me apart
The Crocodiles' "Tears" is a melancholic song about heartache and the struggle to move on after a relationship has ended. The singer addresses a former lover who has returned, but it's too late for them to reconcile. The first verse uses a metaphor to describe the emotional distance between them, with the ex-lover stuck in the past and unable to see the singer who is right in front of them. The second verse shows the singer's regret for trusting the ex-lover, who promised them "paradise" but didn't deliver. The chorus repeats the word "tears" and emphasizes the emotional toll that the failed relationship has taken on the singer.
The third verse addresses the ex-lover directly, accusing them of lying about their feelings and causing the singer's tears. The line "if this is love I'd like to kick it" shows the singer's frustration and anger with the situation. The final verse mentions other people who try to console the singer, but their efforts are in vain because the hurt is too deep.
The song's simple chord progression and repetitive melody give it a haunting quality that matches the sorrowful lyrics. The use of the word "tears" throughout the song creates a sense of overwhelming emotion that builds with each repetition. Overall, "Tears" captures the feeling of heartbreak and the struggle to let go of a relationship that is no longer healthy.

That happens to be none other than Jenny Morris. It was released in 1979 and was a smash hit in Jenny's native New Zealand. In 1991, she re-recorded the song as a solo artist, but sadly, it was a complete miss on the charts.

A beautiful young Kiwi lady I met & fell in love with back in 1982, introduced me to this song by an equally young - Jenny Morris. It is catchy tune, which I love to listen to, still today! The lovely lady & I were re-united for a coffee & chat, last year when she visited Perth, after an absence of some 33 years. She is more beautiful now, than when I saw her last, back in the summer of 1983. A lovely heart & a beautiful mind. This song reminds me of her...and the great times we shared together. Brief, but brilliant! What may have become of us, had I not allowed her to slip away back to the land of the Big White Cloud. The stuff of films & love stories. LOVE....often a universal paradox.
