Put It All Down To Love
The Cross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah
Well looky over here - comin' down the street
It's long face Sally - the saddest girl to meet
She's got all the world's problems - she carries all of our sins
Oh but wait a minute Sally - you gotta mile wide grin

She's got something to smile about
She's found a lover and she wants to shout

Put it all down to love
You know you gotta put it all down to love
You better put it all down to love

Do my eyes deceive - on the other side
Oh it's my pal Joey - the greatest man alive
He's a clown he's a joker - he'll bring you down to your knees
Ah but wait a minute Joey - what are these tears I see

He's gotta reason to cry today
He had a lover but she's gone away

Put it all down to love
You know you really gotta put it all down to love
Put it all down to love

Love's the reason for all the thing's we do
Love's the reason I'm not over you
I'll be the golden bullet in your genetic gun
So look out baby here I come here I come

Yeah all right

Go get 'em Joey
Little joker
She's got something to smile about
She's found a lover and she wants to shout

Put it all down to love
You really gotta put it all down to love
Put it all down to love
Put it all down to love

You really gotta put it all down to love
Put it all down to love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Put it All Down to Love” by The Cross seem to be a commentary on the complexities of interpersonal relationships and the emotions that come with them. The first verse introduces a character named Sally, who is described as carrying the world’s problems and sins on her shoulders. However, despite this, she is grinning from ear-to-ear because she has found love. The chorus encourages the listener to put everything down to love, implying that love is the only thing worth holding onto in life.

The second verse introduces Joey, who is described as a clown and joker who brings people down to their knees. However, he is crying because he has lost his lover. This shows the contrasting emotions and struggles that come with love. The bridge emphasizes that love is the reason for all the things we do in life and explains why the characters in the verses are experiencing the emotions they are. The song ends with a playful and upbeat outro that encourages Joey to go after what he wants and Sally to shout about her love.

Overall, “Put it All Down to Love” is a reminder that love can both lift us up and tear us down, but ultimately it is worth holding onto.

Roger has a great "Rock n Roll" voice. Queen is obviously the mothership...but Roger could easily do his own thing with that voice. He's much more than a "backing vocalist." The dude is talented and can obviously sing. Its a shame the Cross didnt get their fair due back then. Their 'Blue Rock' album is excellent!!!
